Arsene Wenger has warned Nicklas Bendtner not to get carried away after the Denmark striker bagged a hat-trick during Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing of FC Porto on Tuesday night.

Bendtner, who received a barrage of criticism for failing to convert a host of chances against Burnley on Saturday, opened the scoring in Arsenal’s round of 16 Champions League second-leg tie after 10 minutes with a clever finish after Samir Nasri had slotted Andrey Arshavin through on goal.

The Dane tapped in another 15 minutes later following excellent work from Arshavin on the left, and added his third from the spot in stoppage time after Emmanuel Eboue was brought down in the box, capping an enthralling attacking display from the Gunners.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the 6-2 aggregate victory, the Arsenal manager praised Bendtner’s display but said that he hopes it won’t result in over-confidence.

“I hope it [Bendtner’s hat-trick] will not give him too much confidence, but it’s good for him and I’m happy,” Wenger said.

“He had a good game on Saturday, but missed plenty of chances. Three days later he has less chances and scores three goals.”

“I hope it will give him the desire to work even harder,” he added.

Bendtner, 22, has now scored six goals in his last five games for club and country and was understandably delighted with his contribution at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

“It’s fantastic,” he said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done that so I’m very pleased.”

The 22-year-old also claimed that Saturday’s hat-trick of missed chances was not weighing on his mind during Tuesday’s match.

“Every time I play a game I put it behind me as soon as it’s finished and it will be the same with this one.”

Arsenal now turn their attentions to domestic matters and a trip to Hull in Saturday’s early evening Premier League kick-off. Arsene Wenger has given skipper Cesc Fabregas a ’50-50′ chance of recovering from a hamstring strain in time for the clash.
