Paul Lambert praised Aston Villa’s resilience after watching his side fight back from two goals down to earn a point at West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies took a 2-0 lead inside 11 minutes at The Hawthorns thanks to two well-taken finishes by Shane Long.

But Villa fought back after half-time, with Karim El Ahmadi volleying in before Ashley Westwood’s fierce 25-yard effort earned a point for the visitors.

“In the second half we were fantastic. We were really resolute after being two down after 10 minutes,” said Lambert, whose are 12th in the Premier League table.

“We spoke about making changes at half-time but we decided to wait a bit, the three of them have been big players for us all season and they made a huge difference.

“You can never label this team as a team without character, I have nothing but praise for them.”

The Scot added: “I thought Ashley Westwood took the game by the scruff of the neck. He is a fine passer of the ball and he can hit them as well. He was terrific for us.”

Meanwhile, Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar praised his side’s never-say-die attitude after losing two goals so early on.

“If you start a game like that you will be in trouble and we were lucky not to be three down,” said Vlaar.

“I am very proud of the turnaround, it shows we are capable of a lot of things and we should be fine. We had to change it at half-time and we did, we played more of the long ball and won more battles in the game.”
