And Rooney then made the points secure when he tapped in from close range in the 33rd minute to seal a win which keeps David Moyes’ men in seventh place in the Premier League table.
The 28-year-old was delighted by the manner of his side’s triumph after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Liverpool at Old Trafford.
“It’s a much-needed result after last week,” Rooney told Sky Sports.
“The win on Wednesday night against Olympiacos has given us all a big lift. I think you can see the confidence running through the team.
“I think the Olympiacos result was massive for us in terms of picking the fans up and picking ourselves up after the defeat by Liverpool.
“Today we played some lovely football – I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t take a few more chances to make the game a bit easier. There are a lot of positives to take from today.”
