Roberto Martínez singled out Romelu Lukaku for special praise after the striker netted a dramatic winner against 10-man West Ham United on his Everton debut.

Ravel Morrison put Sam Allardyce’s men in front at Upton Park but Leighton Baines equalised from a free-kick after the break.

Mark Noble then fired the home side into the lead from the penalty spot in the 76th minute before he was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Baines drew the Toffees level with another superb free-kick, before Belgian striker Lukaku headed home the winner five minutes from time in east London.

“It’s great to see a young footballer with old-fashioned attributes to be a winner,” Martínez said of Lukaku, who is on loan at Everton from Chelsea.

“His link-up play was magnificent in the winning goal – he gets himself where it really hurts. That was a key moment and showed where he can be a key player for us – he can be very special for us.”

The win hoists Everton up to fourth place in the Premier League table – and the Toffees boss praised his side’s resilience after sealing back-to-back wins.

“I’m delighted with the attitude and mentality we have showed in every performance this season,” he said.

“I’m proud at being unbeaten so far – now we need to work even harder to become better and make sure we keep improving.”
