Sir Alex Ferguson felt Andy Carroll should have been shown a straight red card for his challenge on David De Gea after Manchester United earned a point at West Ham.

Carroll clattered into the goalkeeper just before half-time at Upton Park as the pair tussled for the ball from a West Ham corner, with the England striker also taking out Patrice Evra in the process.

Referee Lee Probert awarded United a free-kick after the clash and Ferguson told Sky Sports: “I think it’s obvious. I don’t think we need to dwell on that. It’s an obvious red card but the referee’s seen it differently.

“We know how they play; the ball’s in the air most of the time. They’re very aggressive as we’ve seen tonight. You hope there’s a strong referee and I’m not so sure we got that tonight.”

The Hammers took the lead through Ricardo Vaz Te’s header but Antonio Valencia equalised when he tapped home from close range after good work by Shinji Kagawa.

Sam Allardyce’s men went ahead again after half-time when Mohamed Diame unleashed a ferocious shot which beat David De Gea.

But United equalised 13 minutes from time in controversial circumstances when Robin van Persie fired home despite replays showing the striker to be in an offside position after Kagawa’s shot rebounded off of both posts.

“We had to stand up to a lot but we kept going,” added Ferguson, whose are now 13 points clear at the top of the table.

“We were down twice and came back – we played like champions in terms of determination and courage so I was pleased with the result.

“We showed determination to win, we don’t like losing and we showed that tonight again. I think their goalkeeper saved them in the last 20 minutes. We just couldn’t finish them off.

“We’ve got five games left, three at home and two away. The players are showing they want to win it, there’s no doubt about that.”

Asked if he thought Van Persie was offside for his side’s equaliser, Ferguson added: “I didn’t see that to be honest with you.”
