West Ham 2 Wigan 0: We didn’t deserve to lose, says Martínez
West Ham 2 Wigan 0: Roberto Martínez is convinced his side deserved something from the game after loss at Upton Park
Roberto Martínez felt Wigan deserved at least a point after watching his side’s Premier League survival hopes take a blow at West Ham.
Matt Jarvis gave the home side the lead in the 21st minute at Upton Park when his cross luckily found the bottom corner, before Kevin Nolan’s late volley sealed the points for Sam Allardyce’s men.
The defeat leaves Wigan, who dominated proceedings in the second half, in 18th place in the Premier League table and three points from safety.
“We should have had something from the game,” Martínez said after the game.
“The second half was as one-sided a game as you will see and to lose [the half] 1-0 was difficult to explain. The team looked a little bit affected by the [Manchester City] fixture on Wednesday.
“Every game is must-win game. You look at the amount of points we have and it is not enough.”
Meanwhile, West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was thrilled to see his side take maximum points despite not hitting top gear.
“I feel really good,” said Allardyce, whose side are now in 10th place and on 42 points.
“While it wasn’t the best performance, the bottom line is, if you score your goals and take your chances, you win football matches.
“Their possession was better than ours but the chances they had they either missed or Jussi Jaaskelainen saved them. We knew Wigan would push forward which left them defensively weakened and we exposed them.”
