Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal were made to work for three points after a slender victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

In a tight opening half, Wigan had the best chance to break the deadlock but Arouna Kone failed to beat Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.

Wenger’s men did finally move ahead when Jean Beausejour was penalised for a foul on Theo Walcott in the area and Mikel Arteta dispatched the ensuing penalty in the 60th minute.

Wigan were unable to conjure up a leveller despite late pressure and the three points moved Arsenal up to third position in the Premier League ahead of Chelsea.

“It was hard-fought. Wigan are a good side. We were not as good, sharp and fluent as Monday [when beating Reading],” said Wenger.

“It was a tough game and Wigan can surprise a lot of teams. Once we were 1-0 up it was all Wigan but we were well organised. It looked like from outside [that it was a penalty for us].”

Wenger also maintained Walcott can play in a central role after a muted display by the England international in comparison to his performance in a 5-2 victory over Reading.

“I am convinced he can do that. Today he didn’t get that much service but he worked hard and got us the penalty,” added Wenger.
