Roberto Mancini admitted Manchester City were “lucky” after the Citizens edged to victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

The Latics came close to scoring in the first half when Ronnie Stam’s cross was met by Arouna Kone, but the striker was unable to guide his effort goalwards with Joe Hart beaten.

Balotelli should have netted shortly after half-time following a good cross from Maicon, before the Italy international finally broke the deadlock with a scrappy goal from close range with 20 minutes remaining.

City wrapped up the win when David Silva and Gareth Barry combined to set up substitute James Milner, who fired a stunning long-range effort past Ali Al-Habsi.

“It was important because it’s always a difficult game because they play very well and Martínez is a great manager,” Mancini told BBC Sport.

“We were lucky. I think I am lucky. Wigan played 3-4-3 and we had a problem with them on the channel. When we changed we did not have any problems. I think Mario [Balotelli] can do better.

“He scored one important goal but can continue to improve. For me, he did not play very well. I was happy for James [Milner] but it was a second hamstring injury for him and I hope he’ll be back in 10 days.”

Roberto Martínez expressed his disappointment at seeing his side suffer defeat as the Wigan manager felt his side contained the defending Premier League champions for the opening two thirds of the match.

“I thought for 60 minutes we edged it,” said Martínez.

“We were outstanding and the way we stopped them from being fluent was very good. But we did not have the clarity in the final third and the confidence was not there.

“I thought the first goal would be vital. We stopped Man City really well for an hour and you have to score.

“We created the chance but world-class strikers will take half chances. A 2-0 scoreline will look a normal result but we’re extremely disappointed with that outcome.”
