Andy Murray admitted he was surprised to see Rafael Nadal crash out of Wimbledon after the Scot sealed a comfortable 6-4 6-3 6-2 victory over Benjamin Becker to reach the second round at SW19.

The British number one, who dismantled his German opponent just last week at Queen’s, was broken once in the opening set but otherwise overpowered Becker, sealing victory in an hour and 52 minutes.

On a day when rival Nadal was incredibly beaten by Steven Darcis, it was a reassuring performance from the second seed, who showed no signs of struggle with the back injury which forced him to pull out of the French Open.

“I thought it was a pretty high-standard match, apart from a few games in the middle of the first set,” Murray said.

“We had a lot of good rallies. He served well for the first couple of sets. The back feels fine. So that’s a positive and yeah, the body feels good.”

Nadal’s defeat diminishes the possibility of a match-up with his great rival, but the US Open champion added: “It’s (Nadal’s defeat) is pretty irrelevant right now.

“I’m sure for you guys (the media) it’s very relevant but for the players, especially me, I have to win at least four more matches before that would even become something I would think about.

“It’s obviously surprising. But the consistency Rafa, Roger, Novak have shown in the slams over the last five, six years, it’s going to be almost impossible to keep that up forever.”

In defeating Becker, the Olympic gold medallist not only sets up a clash Yen-hsun Lu but it means he has eclipsed Fred Perry’s British men’s record total of 106 match victories in Grand Slam tournaments.

“The Grand Slams are obviously the pinnacle of our sport. It’s the tournaments I prepare extremely hard for so I guess that shows I’ve played some of my tennis at the slams, and hopefully I can continue that,” said Murray.
