Wimbledon 2013: Laura Robson happy to handle ‘favourite’ tag

Laura Robson believes she is beginning to handle the pressure of being a pre-match “favourite” after her second-round win over Mariana Duque-Marino.

The British number one won 6-4 6-1 on Centre Court to reach the Wimbledon third round for the first time in her career on Friday.

And despite admitting to being nervous before the encounter, Robson believes she is starting to cope with the added expectation her gradual improvement is bringing.

“I knew going into the match today that I was the favorite, and I thought I handled that pretty well,” Robson said.

“I was kind of having a little bit of [bad] timing with my serve throughout the whole match but I managed to break her at the end of the first set, which was big.”

Robson will now play world number 71 Marina Erakovic, a doubles specialist, but the 19-year-old is expecting a challenging encounter despite the New Zealander’s lowly ranking.

“I know it’s going to be a tough one,” she continued. “She’s been doing really well in doubles lately, as well. Her net game is on the ball.

“I’ve lost to her on grass before. She’s got a big game, a huge serve, a good slice as well – a perfect game for grass.

“I still know it’s going to be tough, and I’m just going to have to play very well and focus the whole match to win. [It] doesn’t matter really who you’re playing; you just have to go in with that attitude.”

The British number one admits her ultimate ambition is to lift the title at SW19 and she feels Centre Court is a better venue to play on under the roof.

“The biggest dream is to win here pretty much,” Robson added. “That’s how it always has been.

“[Under the roof] the crowd is a lot louder, which is great. It’s really exciting playing under the roof because you feel so much more of the atmosphere.

“In terms of playing, it’s a little bit faster; I would say it tends to be a tad slippier just because of the humidity in there. Other than that, it’s good.”
