Maria Sharapova insisted that she still loves playing on grass despite her three-set defeat by Angelique Kerber in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

The French Open champion and fifth seed slumped to a 7-6 4-6 6-4 loss to the world No7 at the All England Club on Tuesday.

I think my game suits the surface extremely well

The 27-year-old won her only Wimbledon title 10 years ago, but has made it as far as the quarter-finals just once in her last eight visits to SW19.

“Despite the results and the fact that I’ve lost here and haven’t had good results, I still love playing on grass,” said Sharapova. “I think my game suits the surface extremely well.

“It’s always tough to say that you love playing out there after losing a match, but I really do. Considering I didn’t play any matches, I thought I felt much better on it than I did the previous couple of years.”

Sharapova continued: “I always consider myself one of the favourites because I’ve won Grand Slams before and been number one in the world.

“It’s absolutely normal for people to have high expectations of me doing well in Grand Slam stages. I certainly do, as well. Today could have gone either way, and it didn’t go my way.”

Kerber will go on to face Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Sabine Lisicki, who beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3 3-6 6-4, will take on Simona Halep in the last eight.
