Wimbledon 2014: There are no secrets to my victory, says Novak Djokovic

Wimbledon 2014: Novak Djokovic feels an improvement in his mental attitude was behind his win over Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic insisted that an improved mental attitude was the only factor behind him going one step further to win Wimbledon this year.

The Serb, who lost the 2013 final in straight sets to Andy Murray, battled past Roger Federer 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 to win his second Wimbledon and seventh Grand Slam title.

Djokovic, who had lost his previous three Major finals, clinched victory after letting a championship point slip in the fourth set.

This year everything came together. Emotionally, physically, mentally, I was on the top of my abilities

And the 27-year-old feels that he was “at the top” of his game on Centre Court on Sunday.

“There are no secrets,” said Djokovic. “There is a particular diet that I’ve followed for the last few years [but] it’s nothing new.

“The regime of practice on the court and in the gym, off the court, physical preparation, is the same as it has been for many years.

“I think the biggest difference from Wimbledon this year and last year is mental, it’s not really physical. Yes, I had a tough five‑setter against [Juan Martin] del Potro in the semis last year.

“Maybe I looked tired but I wasn’t tired in the finals. Emotionally I just wasn’t there. I wasn’t at my best.

“I think that this year everything came together. Emotionally, physically, mentally, I was on the top of my abilities. That’s what got me the trophy.”

Federer, who was aiming for an eighth title at Wimbledon, felt the contest was precisely as close as the scoreline suggested.

“I kept believing and kept trying to play offensive tennis,” said Federer. “I’m happy it paid off in some instances. As you can imagine, I’m very disappointed not being rewarded with victory.

“But it was close. Novak deserved it at the end clearly, but it was extremely close.”
