John Arne Riise heaped praise on Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool FC defender helped the Reds to secure a 2-0 win at Wolves on Friday night.

The Netherlands international started at centre-half alongside Dejan Lovren in the absence of Joe Gomez at Molineux Stadium.

Van Dijk showed great composure, superb reading of the game and a turn of pace when required to keep Wolves at bay throughout the Premier League fixture.

Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock in the first half with a deft finish after Fabinho produced his second assist in successive Premier League games.

Wolves looked to put the Liverpool FC defence under pressure in the second half but Van Dijk helped to marshall Jurgen Klopp’s back four.

And the Dutch centre-half managed to get on the end of Salah’s cross to place a finish past Rui Patricio to seal three points.

Van Dijk and his Liverpool FC defensive colleagues equalled a Premier League record after conceding just seven goals before Christmas Day in the top flight.

Former Liverpool FC defender Riise singled out Van Dijk for special praise on Twitter after Friday night’s 2-0 win.

Riise wrote on social media: “No other CB has come into a new team and completely changed the whole way of defending. No other CB has had such a big impact in the defensive record like @VirgilvDijk has for @LFC. Everybody has improved! That shows you have good he is!”

He added: “And then of course he scores!!!!! Haha!!! Get in @VirgilvDijk 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻⚽️⚽️🔝🔝 Sooooo what did I teeet about this guy? 🙋🏼‍♂️”

Ex-Liverpool FC goalkeeper Ray Clemence hailed a big win for the Reds, as well as raving about Van Dijk’s assured performance.

Clemence wrote on Twitter: “Huge result @LFC tonight not the greatest performance in difficult conditions but @JamesMilner showed versatility again & @VirgilvDijk majestic #YNWA”

Liverpool FC are four points clear of Manchester City ahead of the defending champions’ clash against Crystal Palace.
