Ashley Cole has announced his retirement from international football after being left out of England’s World Cup squad.

The 33-year-old Chelsea left-back won 107 caps and played at three World Cups and two European championships after making his debut against Albania in March 2011.

Twitter’s media office revealed that Cole’s three tweets confirming his retirement received more than 30K retweets in 10 minutes, and here is the best of the reaction from the defender’s fellow professionals.

Three Lions legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) heaps praise on Cole: “Gracious words on twitter from @TheRealAC3 who’s announced he’s retired from int football. Wish him well, he’s been a terrific player.”

Retired midfielder Fabrice Muamba ‏(@fmuamba) believes Cole is still the best left-back in the world: “Like it or not @TheRealAC3 is still the best left back in the business. Thank you for your service.”

Former Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison (‏@morrisonclinton) reckons Roy Hodgson should have taken Cole: “Would of definitely took @TheRealAC3 to the World Cup but its all about opinions England will miss him fact.”
