Li Na booked her place in the semi-finals of the WTA Championships for the first time with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Victoria Azarenka in Istanbul.

Azarenka required lengthy treatment on a back injury at 2-3 in the opening set and lost the next eight games as China’s Li sealed a comfortable win.

Li said: “Today the match is not about tennis, [it was] about fitness … because I thought maybe after the first set she will give up or retire, but she still try to continue to play.

“I think it’s tough because I have to focus, hope all time, because you never know what happen on the court.”

Azarenka, who has withdrawn 25 times either before or during matches over the past eight seasons, added: “I just wanted to try to do my best for the fans who came and watched our match, for respect for my opponent. It was just about trying to do the most you can out there.”

The result means Jelena Jankovic, who lost to Sara Errani 6-4 6-4, will meet Serena Williams in the last four.

Li, meanwhile, will face Petra Kvitova, who battled past Germany’s Angelique Kerber 6-7(3) 6-2 6-3.
