WTA Finals 2014: Serena Williams to face Caroline Wozniacki
Serena Williams will take on Caroline Wozniacki in the last four of the WTA Finals in Singapore
Serena Williams will take on Caroline Wozniacki in the last four of the WTA Finals in Singapore after the semi-final line-up was confirmed on Friday.
Simona Halep plays Agnieszka Radwanska in the other semi-final after Maria Sharapova’s win over the Pole wasn’t enough to get her through.
The Russian could have kept alive her hopes with a straight-sets victory but squandered three match points in the second set and is out of the tournament despite winning 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-2.
“I got the job done,” said Sharapova. “I know I’m not moving forward, but I’m proud of that effort and to finish the year off on this way.
“I will not be chasing the number one ranking next season. I think adding more Grand Slams is the top priority.”
Wozniacki beat Petra Kvitova 6-2 6-3 in their final group match, while Ana Ivanovic’s 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 6-3 win over Halep was not enough to see the Serb through to the last four.
“Well, my match-up against [Serena] hasn’t been that great,” Wozniacki said.
“I won once and lost like 10 times or nine. I don’t know. I don’t even count anymore. But it’s a new tournament. It’s new week and I’ve been playing well, really.
“Again, I believe if I play like I did today, doesn’t matter who’s on the other side, I can win.”
