WTA Finals 2014: Serena Williams wins fifth season-ending title

Serena Williams beats Simona Halep in straight sets to win her fifth WTA Finals title in Singapore

Serena Williams could not hide her excitement after beating Simona Halep in straight sets to win her fifth WTA Finals title in Singapore.

The world No1 triumphed 6-3 6-0 over her Romanian opponent to claim her 64th WTA title, moving her three behind Billie Jean King for the seventh-most of the Open Era.

“I just started training again last week because I had such a bad knee in Beijing,” said Williams.

“I can’t believe I even made it to Singapore, and now I have the Billie Jean King Trophy, so I’m just really excited.”

The title win was William’s seventh of 2014, marking the fourth time that the 33-year-old has won at least that many in a season.

“I want to thank everybody for supporting me and watching all of our matches,” said Halep, the first Romanian to reach the championship match at the WTA Finals.

“It was an amazing week for me, so I am happy – I cannot be sad that I lost.”

Meanwhile, Cara Black and Sania Mirza won their fifth doubles title in Singapore, beating Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai.
