Aston Villa dealt a blow to Chelsea’s title hopes as they beat the Premier League leaders 1-0 at Villa Park.

After a goalless first half, the Blues were reduced to 10 men at Villa Park when Willian was shown a second yellow card, before Fabian Delph flicked in Marc Albrighton’s cross to put his team in front.

Ramires was then shown a straight red card as the west Londoners slipped to their fourth league defeat of the season.

The game prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville (@GNev2) is desperate to get across some simple tactical advice: “Might be a simple thing but can Benteke go and stand wide on the touchline on GK kicks and pose Matic a question!”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (@morriskid ) isn’t impressed with Chris Foy’s performance: “Absolute joke Ref…that’s not even a foul let alone a yellow card!!! Jank”

Andros Towsend’s father Troy Townsend (@Towno10) agrees: “If that is a yellow card then we all might as well give up the game. #Shocking”

Former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) feels Villa deserve their lead: “Villa missed a few and now score they deserve it . I am so surprised and wrong about the result. Can they hold on 8 mins.”

Crawley Town defender James Hurst (@hursty43 ) reckons Villa’s winner is a big confidence-boost for Arsenal: “Delph has just won Arsenal the league.”

Ex-England cricketer and Chelsea fan Kevin Pietersen (@KP24) is aghast: “Oh no! @chelseafc”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is glad to see the Chelsea Express come to a shuddering halt: “Delph puts Villa ahead which enlivens the title race.”

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge (@Realaldo474) is enjoying seeing the Chelsea’s mind games backfire: “Looks like Mourinho’s mind games are working!!!!! City should now win the league??”

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Jim Magilton (@magilton7) hopes Liverpool can do the business tomorrow: “Oops! Chelsea beaten! Big game tomorrow for Pool!!”

More from Pietersen (@KP24): “Guess who’s gonna get the headlines tomorrow? Believe me, it won’t be Villa! THE SPECIAL ONE! #legend”

Kevin Davies (@Kevin__Davies) hopes the title goes down to the wire: “Another twist in the title challenge, sure it won’t be the last. Think it will go to the last day?!”

And finally, Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo (facebook.com/YayaSanogoal) is determined to help the Gunners beat Tottenham on Sunday: “Victory of Aston Villa against Chelsea. Red card for Ramires, Willian, and Mourinho. Everything is still possible for Arsenal! We have to win tomorrow! ‪#‎coyg‬”
