Chris Eubank Snr does not blame Jake Paul or Gervonta Davis for making a mockery of boxing

Chris Eubank Snr has given his view on the Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis exhibition ahead of their 14 November clash.

The current WBA lightweight champion, Davis, has received scrutiny for taking part in this Netflix bout against Paul because of his standing as a current titleholder in the sport.

Since the announcement, fighters have chimed in with their opinions on the bout, with the fighters getting the brunt of the critiques, as one ex-champion claimed they have done ‘nothing’ for boxing.

It is not the first time a family member of ‘The Problem Child’ has competed in a controversial exhibition, as his brother Logan Paul fought Floyd Mayweather in 2021.

But this has drawn more scrutiny for the bigger weight differential between the pair, and it has been criticised by the boxing legend Eubank Snr.

He has warned against this fight and his own son’s fight against Conor Benn because of the dangers of fighting a boxer with a disadvantage in size.

However, in a video posted to his YouTube channel, ‘Simply the Best’ did not place blame on the fighters for this contest being signed.

Eubank said: “If he is allowed to. It’s all fun and games. The reason why it wouldn’t get past me is because there are rules. Without those rules being adhered to, there’s no way you can do that. That makes a mockery of boxing. The sport that births kings.

“If promoters were held to the rules by a controlling body, then this could not happen. This rubbishes boxing.

“It’s a name. Two names are fighting. And this brings in a tremendous amount of money for the broadcasters at the expense of a tradition. This will not stand. It is an outrage.”

He has placed the blame on both sanctioning bodies and promoters because they are not ‘doing their jobs’ of protecting fighters.

The former star went on to name his ex-opponent, Michael Watson, as someone who suffered life-changing injuries as a result of their boxing match, showing the dangers of the sport.

The almost 60 lb difference in the contest with Gervonta and ‘The Problem Child’ raises questions about how safety will be maintained.

Eddie Hearn makes a surprising claim that Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul could still happen

Previously, ‘El Gallo’ was in talks to fight former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua before he signed the contract for the ‘Tank’ bout.

Eddie Hearn claimed ‘mismatch’ talks had taken place, but he was left confused when the announcement was made by Netflix.

While he had seemed to move away from the idea of the heavyweight vs cruiserweight, Hearn has revealed it could still take place in 2026.

Speaking to The Ring, he said: “I had a long call with Nakisa (Bidarian). They want to do the AJ fight after Gervonta.

“I explained to Nakisa that if Jake Paul gets chinned by Gervonta Davis we can’t fight you, mate. I know it’s an exhibition so that probably won’t happen but we have to wait and see what happens there first.”

Joshua is still scheduled to return in January next year, following his hiatus due to injury, and will likely land a fight against an opponent in the top 20, with Ghana being explored as a location.
