In 2007, McLaren raised eyebrows after they signed a rookie driver to their ranks. That said driver was a certain Lewis Hamilton.
After going winless in 2006 with Kimi Raikkonen, Juan Pablo Montoya and Pedro De La Rosa (who replaced the Colombian mid-season), McLaren needed a new driver pairing. Raikkonen left for Ferrari, while De La Rosa went back to his testing role.
The Woking outfit pulled off a major coup by signing two-time defending champion Fernando Alonso from Renault. But their second driver surprised the paddock and the F1 world, as they signed rookie Hamilton, fresh off winning the GP2 Series.
Back then, and even now, it is extremely uncommon for a rookie to make their debut for a top team in Formula 1. Hamilton was not expected to fight for a world championship straight away, as McLaren had their plan to win the title with Alonso.
But the Brit would go on to stun the world with what is widely regarded as the greatest rookie season in the sport’s history. Missing out on the title by just one point, Hamilton set numerous records along the way.

Lewis Hamilton set multiple records during his rookie Formula 1 season with McLaren in 2007
Hamilton was immediately on the pace of the frontrunners, finishing third on debut in Melbourne. It only took him six races to claim his first F1 win in Canada, which was swiftly followed by another victory at Indianapolis.
With these results, he took the lead of the championship, subsequently setting the record for the youngest driver to lead the drivers’ standings at 22 years and 126 days old. Hamilton had a blistering start to the 2007 campaign with nine podiums from the first nine races – another record for a rookie.
| Pos. | Driver | Team | Points |
| 1 | Kimi Raikkonen | Ferrari | 110 |
| 2 | Lewis Hamilton | McLaren | 109 |
| 3 | Fernando Alonso | McLaren | 109 |
| 4 | Felipe Massa | Ferrari | 94 |
| 5 | Nick Heidfield | BMW | 61 |
| 6 | Robert Kubica | BMW | 39 |
| 7 | Heikki Kovalainen | Renault | 30 |
| 8 | Giancarlo Fisichella | Renault | 21 |
| 9 | Nico Rosberg | Williams | 20 |
| 10 | David Coulthard | Red Bull | 14 |
The McLaren driver went on to win four races in 2007, equalling Jacques Villeneuve’s record set in 1996 during his rookie season with Williams. Hamilton also broke the record for most pole positions in a rookie season with six.
His incredible campaign ended in heartbreak, however, as a slip into the gravel in the pits in China and a mechanical issue in Brazil meant he lost the title to Raikkonen by just one point. Drawing with Alonso in second on 109 points, he has the record for the highest number of points scored by a rookie.

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli can break Lewis Hamilton’s 2007 record in 2025
Hamilton would go on to win the title in his sophomore season in 2008, dramatically beating Felipe Massa. He spent another four seasons with McLaren before leaving for Mercedes in 2013 after years of unreliable machinery in Woking.
The Brit went on to win another six titles and establish himself as, statistically, the greatest F1 driver in history. Hamilton departed Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025 and was replaced by a rookie in Kimi Antonelli.
The 19-year-old Italian is the first driver since Hamilton in 2007 to begin his F1 career with a top team. Like his predecessor, Antonelli has set numerous records in his rookie season, such as the youngest leader of a lap and the youngest polesitter in any qualifying format.
Currently sitting seventh in the standings with 78 points, Antonelli has the chance to break Hamilton’s record for most points scored by a rookie. Of course, the Mercedes driver has better odds due to the improved points system, but it would be another accolade for the Italian to boast in his young career.
