Kimi Antonelli has been told he needs to show he deserves his Mercedes seat by beating his teammate, George Russell.

The young Italian showed promise to start the season. Kimi Antonelli finished fourth in his Formula One debut in Australia, then came sixth in the two races that followed. But since then, the Mercedes driver has as many DNFs as top 10 finishes.

Antonelli’s performances have clearly weighed heavily on the 19-year-old’s shoulders. He was particularly upset in Spa when he was knocked out of Q1. But he’s had the summer break to rest and recuperate ahead of the second half of the season, where the rookie has a lot to prove.

Kimi Antonelli told he needs to earn his Mercedes seat, and beat George Russell

Mercedes’ season has had the cloud of off-track negotiations hanging over it for a number of months. Russell claimed Verstappen was having contract talks with the team in Austria as the Brit awaited a new contract.

Eventually, after rumours circulated that Verstappen was joining Mercedes, the Dutchman confirmed he was staying at Red Bull after the firing of Christian Horner. That settled down the off-track rumours.

But on the circuit, things weren’t any easier. The form the Silver Arrows had shown at the start of the season had dropped off as they added upgrades to the car. Eventually, Mercedes returned to their old setup, and Russell secured a podium finish in Hungary.

But Antonelli’s form didn’t return like Russell’s. The young driver’s confidence is shattered. However, Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli told Motorsport Italia that Mercedes needs to see improved performances from him in the second half of the season.

He said, “The challenge in Mercedes will be interesting: George Russell will have to confirm his leadership in the team with the star, but Kimi Antonelli, after a very promising start to the championship, has not made the leap we all expected.

He continued, “Therefore the Bolognese is called upon to show that not only does he deserve a place in F1 but that he can begin to undermine his teammate.”

Russell is one of the best drivers on the F1 grid, and given the right car would contend for the championship. But Antonelli was dubbed as a generational talent as Verstappen was when he arrived in F1.

Verstappen won in his first Red Bull race, and while Antonelli isn’t faced with those expectations, he needs to string some results together to give assurances to Team Principal Toto Wolff.

Mercedes and Ferrari in two horse race for second in the Constructors

Beyond the need to prove himself for his future in F1, Antonelli needs to start producing for the team so they can chase Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. They are currently 24 points behind the Prancing Horses in third.

Ferrari have endured their own struggles this season. Lewis Hamilton has never felt comfortable in the Ferrari, which he called difficult to drive. But despite the seven-time world champion’s difficulties, he’s still 45 points ahead of Antonelli.

Mercedes and Ferrari have been close competitors this season, battling for places behind the dominant McLarens. But having two drivers consistently in the points has given Ferrari the edge in the fight for second.

Antonelli is currently on 64 points, 108 behind Russell. With Red Bull falling back into the pack, they have one aim for the back end of the season: hunt down Ferrari and claim second in the championship.

Given the pace of the McLarens, Mercedes would take that result as a positive as they build towards the 2026 regulation changes.
