Sergio Perez is set to make his return to the Formula One grid in 2026, according to reports.

The six-time race-winner was considered one of the most consistent high-performers in F1 prior to his move to Red Bull. He fell victim to Red Bull’s “second seat curse” however, and was replaced by Liam Lawson at the end of last season.

Lawson lasted two races at Red Bull, somewhat vindicating the Mexican. And as he looks set to make his return to Formula One, it’s important to remember the driver he used to be.
Sergio Perez goes from last to first for maiden Formula One win at 2020 Sakir Grand Prix
In one of the most incredible performances in recent memory, Perez took his first win in Formula One at the 2020 Sakir Grand Prix.
Driving for Racing Point, dubbed the “pink Mercedes” due to its similarity to the fastest car on the grid, Perez had a fast car underneath him but lived in the shadow of Lewis Hamilton who dominated the season. Hamilton had COVID for the Sakir Grand Prix, however, and was replaced by Williams driver George Russell.
Perez started fifth, but he was turned around by Charles Leclerc, which took he and Max Verstappen out of the race, and Perez down to 18th. Amazingly, Perez carved through the field like butter and was back in the points by lap 21 after a move on Lando Norris.
The Mexican showed lightning-fast pace and climbed back to the podium places on lap 57. Mercedes were cruising to a one-two ahead of him, however, with Russell looking good for the win on his debut for the team.
In a shocking twist of events, a late safety car was called, forcing Mercedes to pit both of their drivers. Confusion during a double-stack meant Valtteri Bottas had a slow stop, and Russell had to pit again. Perez was the race leader.
Russell hunted Perez down in the final laps and was closing in fast. A second heartbreak then hit. The Brit suffered a rear-left puncture, seeing him out of contention. Perez was able to bring the car home for an amazing race win.
Sergio Perez is joining Cadillac in 2026, according to reports
Perez is about to make his return to Formula One with an 11th team on the grid, as he is reported to have signed a deal with Cadillac for the upcoming season.
Multiple sources indicate that there are no immediate plans to make driver announcements as deliberations on its inaugural driver line-up continue. But reports suggest that Cadillac may make the announcement as early as the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The six-time race winner brings a wealth of experience to the new team and can help them find their feet in their first season in the sport. His ties to the Latin-American market, and links to the likes of billionaire Carlos Slim, also represent a host of potential commercial deals for the team.
Cadillac are also eyeing Bottas and Mick Schumacher as potential options for next season.
Perez is a driver of immense talent, and a comeback to the sport will be a welcome opportunity for him to remind fans what he is capable of on the track.
