Steven Gerrard says Liverpool “absolutely adore” Luis Suárez and hopes the forward will remain at Anfield amid interest from Arsenal.

The Uruguayan was used as a substitute in Gerrard’s testimonial on Saturday, with Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson both netting in a 2-0 victory over Olympiakos at Anfield.

Arsenal have already launched two unsuccessful bids for the 26-year-old striker, who has made no secret of his desire to leave Anfield for a “change of environment” following a turbulent spell at the Reds.

Although Gerrard admits the final decision over his future ultimately rests with Suárez, the Liverpool captain would love the South American to stay and help the club win some silverware this season.

“Hopefully we keep our magician No7 [Suárez] and we can have a crack at winning things this year,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “That’s what I want to do in my final few years – just compete and challenge for the top honours.

“It’s not down to me [if Suárez stays], it’s down to himself to make a huge decision. It’s all about himself and his family but the people at Liverpool, and even the people on tour all over the world, they absolutely adore him and they’d love nothing more than for him to stay but it’s totally down to him.”

Liverpool were able to give their young up-and-coming stars a run out against the Greek side ahead of the new Premier League season following a demanding pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

In particular, Raheem Sterling starred with an assist for Henderson’s goal – and Gerrard back the duo, as well as Jordan Ibe, to impress for the 18-time English champions this term.

“We’ve got some wonderful youngsters who are growing each year,” Gerrard added.

“I think it’s a big year for Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and we’ve got a young kid who is going to be unbelievable in Jordan Ibe.”
