Arsene Wenger believes that Arsenal’s new-found defensive stability has been one of the main building blocks of the Gunners’ impressive run of form.
Wenger’s men currently sit top of the Premier League table after having secured five straight wins following their surprise opening-day defeat by Aston Villa.
Arsenal travel to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday looking to keep their two-point lead at the top of the table intact.
And Wenger feels that a run of consistent defensive performances has helped his side to string together their impressive 10-game winning run in all competitions.
“We have managed to get a better defensive stability,” Wenger said.
“Our game with Bayern [a 2-0 away win in the Champions League last season] was maybe a turning point, where everybody expected us to be trounced and lose 6-0.
“After that, we managed a consistent run towards the end of the season and that convinced the players that we must have some quality.
“I believe as well that the consistency of our results comes from a greater attitude of the players.”
Wenger also feels that having a core of young British players who have grown up together has been important for his side.
“I believe we have a good mixture of young, British players who have been educated here,” the Frenchman continued.
“I think every successful club has four or five players who are really home grown. For example, [Wojciech] Szczesny, [Kieran] Gibbs, [Jack] Wilshere, [Aaron] Ramsey, [Theo] Walcott, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain have all grown up and started in the Premier League together.
“Then we have experienced players with a good mentality. That’s basically it, but let’s not forget we have won nothing.
“We have to continue to have that that hungry attitude, to improve from game-to-game.
“I believe we can do better and there’s more to come from us but that will depend on how much we want it and how hungry we are to improve.”
