Daniel Farke should avoid signing Champions League winner described as ‘outstanding’ by Jurgen Klopp

Leeds United begin their Premier League campaign at Elland Road against Everton soon, yet show no signs of slowing down their activity in the summer transfer window.

Leeds have already completed seven signings this transfer window, accumulating £80 million in transfer spend from a rumoured club budget of around £150 million.

The centre of midfield has seen large reinforcement with the likes of Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach added to existing squad members Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka.

With Daniel Farke looking to use a new 4-3-3 system in the Premier League, it is not unlikely that another signing is made to cover the midfield three.

The Leeds manager could look to the free agent market once again, following the signing of Lukas Nmecha on a free from Wolfsburg, and links with an ex-Champions League winner, who has plenty of Premier League pedigree.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could bring Premier League experience and a calm head for a bargain price for Daniel Farke

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in negotiations with Besiktas to terminate his contract this summer, which would see his deal paid up and the midfielder available on a free transfer.

As discussions continue over his future, The Sun have reported that Leeds are among the sides looking at a possible move.

The Englishman has an abundance of Premier League experience with 235 games under his belt, alongside achieving 35 England caps between 2012 and 2019.

He received plenty of praise from Jurgen Klopp during his spell at Liverpool, with the German claiming that Oxlade-Chamberlain was capable of delivering “moments where he was incredibly outstanding”.

The midfielder would provide great back-up for the starting midfield three and could add some great experience to a young Leeds side with limited exposure to top-flight English football.

With no transfer fee required for the former Arsenal man, Farke would still be able to distribute funds towards signing the forwards that his Leeds side so desperately needs.

On paper, the signing of Oxlade-Chamberlain on a free appears to be a low-risk financial move and could aid in the departure of fringe squad players such as Sam Greenwood, yet Farke should be deterred by a long history of injuries that have plagued Oxlade-Chamberlain’s career.

A history of injuries could prove a deterrent for Daniel Farke and Leeds United to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

With injuries restricting Oxlade-Chamberlain to less than 50 total appearances in the last three seasons combined, the signing of the midfielder could prove to be a misstep should he get injured again.

The Englishman is currently sidelined with an MCL injury and would be unlikely to pass a medical currently at Elland Road.

Whilst it had been claimed earlier in the summer transfer window that Leeds had made an offer for Oxlade-Chamberlain, Farke instead moved for the likes of Longstaff and Stach, who possessed a much clearer history of injury-free campaigns.

It is likely the midfielder would also command a large wage and signing-on fee, due to no fee being paid to a club for his signature, which would further deter the Leeds manager, who is looking to shift a number of high earners off the books.

The experience that Oxlade-Chamberlain could bring to the Leeds side could be a valuable asset; however, an extensive injury history is likely to scare away many suitors, including the Whites, from signing the former Champions League winner.
