David De Gea has warned his Manchester United team-mates that finishing in second place isn’t good enough for the Red Devils.
Manchester United look set to finish as runners up to Manchester City in the Premier League table following a mixed second season under Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils are 16 points adrift of runaway Premier League champions Manchester City to highlight the gap between the two Manchester clubs.
Jose Mourinho’s side suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to La Liga outfit Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16.
Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup in their first season under Mourinho after the Portuguese coach replaced Louis van Gaal.
De Gea was voted Manchester United’s player of the season by the Red Devils squad after his impressive performances in the Red Devils goal.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website about their 2017-18 season, De Gea said:
“I think it is special to receive this award from my team-mates.
“I love all of them. We are fighting for second place and we are in the final, but we are Manchester United so it is not enough. We have to improve for next season.
“Of course, it’s good to finish the season with a trophy especially with [it being at] Wembley and [in front of] the fans.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson led the Red Devils to his 13th top-flight crown.
The Red Devils were 3-2 winners against Southampton in the League Cup final at Wembley before Manchester United eased to a 2-0 victory over Ajax in the Europa League showpiece.
