The Sport Review takes a look at the German media’s reaction to their national side’s 4-1 win over England on Sunday.
Der Tagesspiegel inevitably refers to the much-debated 1966 goal but this time calls it poetic justice for the Germans. The newspaper says it was created by Frank Lampard yet denied by referee Jorge Larrionda.
“Under whatever name this will go down in history,” wrote Lars Spannagel of Der Tagesspiegal. “It will become the phantom goal of Bloemfontein.”
Michael Rosentritt from the same publication describes how England were defeated by “youthful German verve.” Rosentritt admits had the phantom goal been allowed then the course of the match would have “probably have taken a different course.”
Die Welt praises the performance of the two-goal hero Thomas Müller. The 20-year-old has already begun writing himself into German folklore with his impressive brace yesterday after “digging in against strong English opponents.”
He countered the “robust nature of the Premier League players” with his “fearless attitude” despite his slender figure.
Der Spiegel credits Germany’s head coach Joachim Löw with masterminding the 4-1 victory.
Löw spotted “the weaknesses of the Three Lions and mercilessly exposed them.” Furthermore he had drilled his young German team with “exact and clear tactical objectives”.
