Philippe Coutinho believes that the signing of Virgil van Dijk is a “statement” of intent by Liverpool FC.

The Reds confirmed the signing of the Netherlands defender this month after agreeing a transfer fee of around £75m with Southampton.

Van Dijk marked his debut for the Reds by scoring the winning goal in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup third round on Wednesday.

Coutinho, meanwhile, has completed his big-money transfer from Liverpool FC to Barcelona as the Reds reluctantly opted to let the Brazilian leave Anfield.

However, the 25-year-old is confident that Van Dijk will be a great signing for the Reds and says that the Merseyside outfit have a bright future under Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Coutinho said: “They are in a healthy position, with very, very good footballers.

“The signing of Virgil van Dijk is a statement.”

Van Dijk will be hoping to feature for Liverpool FC when the Reds return to Premier League action on Sunday with a crunch clash against leaders Manchester City at Anfield.

The Reds are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they seek Champions League qualification for the second season running under Klopp.

Liverpool FC are likely to be linked with a number of players this month as they look to bolster their squad following Coutinho’s exit.
