Paul Scholes has warned Manchester United that they must step their game up in the race for a top-four finish this season or they could be ousted by the likes of Liverpool FC and Arsenal.
The Red Devils were held to their third successive Premier League draw on Saturday as they drew 0-0 against Southampton at Old Trafford.
That result caused Jose Mourinho’s men to drop down into third place in the Premier League table and left them behind Manchester City and Chelsea in the top flight.
Manchester United will now be keen to avoid slipping further down the table, with the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League looking set to be as competitive as ever.
And former Red Devils midfielder Scholes has warned Manchester United that they must quickly get their campaign back on track or risk having to scramble for a top-four finish.
Speaking to BT Sport after Saturday’s draw, Scholes said: “They need to liven up, this team.
“Top four is not guaranteed at this moment. You’ve got good teams in there – Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal… they’ll all be challenging for the top four.
“The title’s gone, we know that. They’ve got to concentrate and liven up. Find some energy from somewhere. The manager needs to lift them.”
Manchester United will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on Everton at Goodison Park on Monday.
The Red Devils will be aiming to qualify for the Champions League for the second season running this term after they booked their spot in the competition with their Europa League triumph.
