‘Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler perfect mentor for Adam Morgan’

Robbie Fowler can help Liverpool youngster Adam Morgan push for a first-team place, according to former Reds defender Rob Jones.

The former Liverpool striker, Steve McManaman and Jones have been recruited by current Reds boss Brendan Rodgers to coach on a part-time basis at the club’s Melwood Academy.

Naturally, Fowler is tutoring the up-and-coming strikers at the club following his impressive goal-scoring record for the 18-time English champions, netting 128 goals in 162 top-flight appearances.

Morgan, 19, has found himself behind free-scoring Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suárez at Anfield despite his prolific form for the reserves, but Jones believes the forward has the perfect mentor to help him progress.

“He’s doing well. He’s a strong player and is scoring some great goals,” Jones told The Sport Review.

“His confidence is high at the moment. He’s got Robbie Fowler coming in and helping him – I don’t think you can ask for a better mentor then that!”

Jones made 185 top-flight appearances for Liverpool before his career was cruelly cut shot due to a long-standing knee injury in 1999.

As a former England and Liverpool right-back, Jones has been keeping a close eye on Martin Kelly, who has been sidelined for the past 12 months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

And the new part-time Reds coach admits Kelly was unfortunate with the timing of the injury after being called up to England’s Euro 2012 squad and being a first-team regular in early part of 2012/13 season.

“It’s a pity he got an injury. He was playing really well,” Jones added.

“He was confident – running up and down that wing and getting back and defending. So, it’s a pity that he got the injury.

“But now he’s just got to get himself fit and play as many games as he can under his belt.

“I know he played for the Under-21s the other week and got a good run out. It’s hard coming back from long-term injuries.”
