Gary Neville singled out Victor Lindelof for special praise after the Manchester United defender impressed on a disappointing Champions League night at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The Sweden international started alongside Chris Smalling for the visit of Juventus as Manchester United looked to return to winning ways in the Uefa competition.
His centre-half partner inadvertently played a hand in Juve’s winner after Smalling’s clearance went to the feet of Paulo Dybala, who finished past David De Gea to secure a 1-0 win.
Lindelof has struggled to make the step up to the Premier League since his move to Old Trafford from Benfica in a £30m deal in the 2017 summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old made five clearances and three interceptions to ensure Juve were unable to add to their opening goal in the third group-stage fixture.
The Swedish star completed 86 per cent of his attempted passes, which mirrored Leonardo Bonucci’s success with the ball at his feet during the Old Trafford clash.
Former Manchester United defender Neville took to Twitter to praise Lindelof for a strong performance on an otherwise disappointing Tuesday night for the Red Devils.
Neville wrote on social media: “Disappointing overall but I thought Lindelof was excellent..”
Lindelof was linked with a move to Manchester United after Mourinho took over the reins of the Old Trafford in May 2016.
However, the Sweden defender didn’t secure a switch to the 20-time English champions until July 2017 after the Red Devils coughed up a £30m fee.
The former Vasteras star scored two goals in 73 games in all competitions during five seasons at the Portuguese club.
Lindelof won the Portuguese Primeira Liga title three times, the Taca de Portugal twice and the Taca de Liga during his spell at Benfica.
He was named in the Champions League breakthrough team of the year in 2016 to underline his growing reputation in European football.
Lindelof will be hoping to retain his spot in Mourinho’s team for the visit of Everton on Sunday.
