Theo Walcott has revealed that Arsenal are putting greater emphasis on their defensive shape during pre-season training.

The Gunners finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but questions remained over Arsene Wenger’s back four.

The Arsenal boss has signed box-to-box midfielder Granit Xhaka in a deal from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this summer.

The 66-year-old has also been linked with a host of potential defensive signings, although Wenger has only signed Bolton Wanderers defender Rob Holding so far.

And Walcott, who trained with the rest of the Arsenal squad in San Jose on Wednesday, discussed what Wenger and his players have been working on in pre-season training.

“We are all about movement, one-touch finishing and counter-attacking,” Walcott told the media ahead of Thursday’s game against a MLS All-Star XI.

“That’s what we’ve been working on mainly.”

Walcott added: “The defensive shape as well. That’s something that everyone needs to remember.”
