Newcastle United’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent could pay off this season.

Rather than relying solely on the transfer market, the club’s strategy has been to cultivate exceptional young players within their academy, and a trio of standout prospects appears ready for the challenge of senior football.

Their impressive performances have caught the eye of Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, and many believe they are poised to break into the first team based on pure merit.

This season could be a pivotal one for a trio of highly-rated youth players who have been quietly impressing in the academy.

With the club fighting in four competitions, Howe will need to use the full depth of his squad.

Their performances could see them handed an opportunity in the first team as a genuine reward for their hard work and skill, signalling the club’s faith in its youth system.

The three Newcastle academy prospects ready to step up

These players have shown immense promise and could soon be household names among the St. James’ Park faithful.

They have been performing well for the under-21s, but this season could be their big break to make it into the first team.

Sean Neave (Striker)

A homegrown talent, Sean Neave joined the Newcastle academy as a 13-year-old and recently signed his first professional contract.

A prolific goalscorer, he netted 13 goals for the Under-18s last season and has impressed in the Under-21 setup.

He has been training with the first team and was given a squad number, showcasing his eye for goal, which could provide a valuable option for the first team.

He was even on the bench for the Carabao Cup victory at Wembley and received a winners’ medal despite not playing a game for the first team.

Trevan Sanusi (Winger)

A dynamic and pacy forward, Trevan Sanusi has been with the club since 2023.

He arrived on Tyneside after Newcastle beat out major competition from clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal for his signature, a clear testament to his potential.

He has already made his first-team debut in a pre-season friendly and has impressed with his athleticism and direct style of play, which make him a perfect fit for Howe’s system.

Leo Shahar (Defender)

A highly-regarded defender, Leo Shahar has been with the club since the age of 14.

He has been training with the first team in pre-season and has impressed with his composure and tactical intelligence.

As a versatile right-back, he is known for his ability to defend one-on-one and contribute to the attack.

His excellent form for the Under-21s, where he has captained England’s Under-18s, indicates he is ready for the professional stage.

The Lewis Miley template for success

The most recent and compelling example of Newcastle’s youth system at work is Lewis Miley.

The talented midfielder became Newcastle’s youngest-ever Premier League debutant in May 2023, and his rapid rise has set the perfect template for the next generation of academy graduates to break into the first team.

During the 2023-2024 season, Miley made 26 senior appearances, including three in the UEFA Champions League, and scored his first professional goal.

His performance was so impressive that manager Eddie Howe praised his talent and composure.

Miley’s successful transition from the academy to the first team provides a clear pathway for Shahar, Sanusi, and Neave, demonstrating that merit and talent are all that is needed to get a chance under Howe.
