5 – Portugal v Wales – 2016

In Portugal’s 2-0 Euro 2016 semi-final win over Wales, Ronaldo rose above everyone, with a gravity-defying leap to score the opening goal, remaining one of his most memorable.

Following Ronaldo’s goal, Nani quickly added a second, with the forward grabbing the assist.

It was ultimately a step too far for Wales, as Portugal marched on to the final, where they defeated the host nation, France.

4. Portugal vs Sweden – 2013

Billed as Ronaldo vs Zlatan, the tie lived up to the hype.

After scoring four times across two legs, the Portuguese star’s decisive goal in the second match stood out.

A perfectly timed diagonal run, blistering pace, and great control saw Ronaldo calmly round the goalkeeper to extinguish Swedish hopes and seal Portugal’s place at the World Cup.

The meeting between the two great strikers produced a clear winner as the Portuguese legend dazzled over the two legs, proving he was clearly the best player on the pitch.

3. Portugal vs Greece – 2004

On home soil, Portugal suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Greece in their opening game of Euro 2004. But for Ronaldo, it was historic.

At just 19, he scored his first senior international goal, where he rose highest to meet a cross and send a bullet header goalwards.

A mere consolation on the day, but the start of a historic run that still continues.

2. Portugal vs Spain – 2018

Portugal and Spain played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in one of the World Cup’s great group games.

With Spain leading 3-2 late on in 2018, Ronaldo curled a late free kick into the top corner to complete his hat-trick.

The goal not only salvaged a memorable point but also saw him equal Ferenc Puskas as Europe’s all-time leading international scorer on 84.

The match goes down as one of the greatest in World Cup history, with Ronaldo sealing his place in the tie with a ridiculous free-kick.

1. Portugal vs Hungary – 2016

Ronaldo has built a career on delivering when it matters most. After two quiet group games in Euro 2016, he stepped up against Hungary.

His first goal was a moment of genius, a deft backheel flick into the far corner, before scoring the equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw that sent Portugal through to the knockout stages.

The importance of these goals cannot be overstated, as Portugal would have been eliminated. They survived and went on to win the tournament, beating France 1-0 in the final.
