Johnson Wagner tells Keegan Bradley to do one key thing at the Ryder Cup, he’s worried about the New York crowd

The New York crowd at the 2025 Ryder Cup is perhaps the single biggest factor of the highly anticipated contest between America and Europe.

Bryson DeChambeau said he expects the fans at Bethpage Black to make a “tsunami of noise” to crash down on the Europeans. Team Europe captain Luke Donald responded to DeChambeau’s comments, retorting that the crowd could turn on the Americans if they get off to a slow start.

The fans could be the determining factor in this year’s Ryder Cup, but it’s not impossible for the visitors to overcome. Europe beat America last time New York hosted the competition.

Three-time PGA Tour winner Johnson Wagner revealed the key to keeping the New York crowd in Team USA’s corner for the entire weekend.

Johnson Wagner tells Keegan Bradley how to keep the New York crowd on his side

Wagner expressed his concern about Team USA and their Ryder Cup hopes, as they bring four rookies to Bethpage Black. That’s an intense environment for a first-time player. They are unknown quantities stepping into a pressure cooker.

There is genuine concern among Americans that their home crowd could turn if they were to fall into an early hole. Wagner gave USA’s captain Keegan Bradley some advice on how to prevent that from happening.

On Subpar, he said, “I would love to see us get hyped up and get out there and get the crowd going on Friday, and get the crowd going all week.

“I really hope Keegan has them out there engaging the crowd early in the week. I think it’s going to be a pretty big corporate crowd, and New York being the melting pot that it is, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a bunch of European fans out there.

“I hope we can win the crowd over Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday so we don’t have to worry about them turning on us if we go 0-4 in that first session.”

The key, according to Johnson, is to put in the work midweek to get the fans on side. Building a relationship with the New Yorkers early could buy Team USA some leniency from the crowd if Europe were to get off to a red-hot start, as they did in Rome two years ago.

Another crucial part of this is preventing an early European run, so Bradley’s pairings to start Friday could be the biggest decision he makes all weekend.

Johnson Wagner predicts Europe’s Friday pairings at the 2025 Ryder Cup

Friday morning in 2023 was the first time in Ryder Cup history that Europe led 4-0 after the opening foursomes session. That set the tone for the dominance that was to come, which included Scottie Scheffler’s record-breaking loss on Saturday.

LIV Golf duo Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton got Europe underway by beating Scheffler and Sam Burns. Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg followed them up, then came Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka, and finally Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood. They all won their opening matches to send the Roman crowd crazy.

Wagner predicts that Donald will send those first four pairings back out to start proceedings in New York. He said, “Put them right back out. That whole session where they went 4-0 on Friday morning, why on earth would you not just trot those same groups right out there?”

Donald said he isn’t set on his pairings for Bethpage Black, but the benefit of having such an experienced team and a second-time captain is that he knows exactly who complements who.

Bradley may have to learn throughout the weekend and grow into the tournament, which doesn’t bode well for the crowd’s reaction on Friday.
