Rory McIlroy’s golfing brilliance has given birth to a number of iconic moments over the years.
Whether it be McIlroy’s first encounter with Tiger Woods or his legendary Augusta win, the Northern Irishman’s career has been blessed with some truly memorable moments.
There has also been heartbreak along the way, though, something which has endeared McIlroy to the hearts of golfing fans.
With so many noteworthy occasions to reflect upon, the Sport Review has tried its best at ranking ten of the best below.

10) 2009 Dubai Desert Classic
McIlroy won everything there was to win in the junior game and made the step up to the professional ranks in 2007.
After an initial bedding-in period, McIlroy would go on to show everyone what all the hype was about, getting his hands on his first title in 2009 at the Dubai Desert Classic
9) 2011 Masters collapse
McIlroy’s career has suffered from its fair share of ups and downs, most notably at the 2011 Masters.
The Northern Irishman had a commanding lead heading into the final round at Augusta and was on his way to securing his first green jacket.
McIlroy, however, would suffer a heartbreaking collapse on the back nine, handing the tournament to Charl Schwartzel, even going on to finish as low as 15th.
8) Rory’s LIV Golf verdict
Rory’s off-course antics have also sparked several memorable moments, most notably his public criticism of LIV Golf.
In what almost seemed like a defiant defence of the traditional game, McIlroy did not hold back in his disapproval of LIV Golf’s emergence in 2022.

7) First FedEx Cup crown
In typical Rory fashion, he would have to win his FedEx Cup crown the hard way in 2016.
Coming from the pack, McIlroy shot an ultra-impressive 64 in the final round of the TOUR Championship to secure an eventual playoff win over Ryan Moore.
6) 2024 US Open heartbreak
Viewed by many as the most heartbreaking moment of McIlroy’s career, the manner of this defeat seemed like it would haunt the Northern Irishman for the rest of his life.
Leading with only a few holes to go, the Ryder Cup winner would make costly errors on the back nine, bogeying three of his last four holes, handing the title to Bryson DeChambeau in the process.
Luckily for Rory, though, the heartbreak wouldn’t last too long.
5) 2023 Ryder Cup
To be considered the best, you have to rise to the occasion, and it’s fair to say McIlroy has done exactly that in the Ryder Cup.
McIlroy has enjoyed some memorable moments playing for Team Europe, but arguably his best performance came back in 2023.
Simply unplayable throughout the tournament, the Northern Irishman earned four points, helping Europe reclaim the Ryder Cup in Italy.
4) 2012 PGA Championship
Arguably one of Rory’s best-ever performances, the then 25-year-old dominated the field and cruised to his first PGA Championship crown.
Finishing eight shots ahead of his nearest competitor, McIlroy broke Jack Nicklaus’ 1980 record as the largest winning margin in tournament history.
3) 2014 Open Championship
With both the US Open and the PGA Championship already under his belt, McIlroy visited Royal Liverpool in 2014 looking for his first major on British soil.

His father, Gerry, had actually bet on him to lift the Claret Jug ten years prior, and McIlroy would ultimately repay his dad’s faith by beating the likes of Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia to the trophy.
2) 2011 US Open
A golfer’s first major will always live long in the memory.
At just 21 years old, the Holywood native would get his hands on his first major championship at the US Open.
McIlroy was fast becoming one of golf’s biggest talking points at the time, and he would show exactly why at the Congressional, winning the trophy with a dominant eight-shot buffer.
1) 2025 Masters triumph
Simply no other moment could top this list.
Eleven long years of pain and frustration came to an end at Augusta, as McIlroy’s wait for a fifth major finally got its dream ending.
In what almost felt like a victory for golf itself, millions of fans worldwide cheered McIlroy on to an iconic Grand Slam win.
