When Sandy Lyle became the first golfer from the UK to win The Masters to start four years of dominance

We are so accustomed to seeing golfers from the UK and Ireland win the majors in the modern game that we forget that it was actually a long time coming for the Masters.

The Masters had been dominated by Americans for years, with Gary Player one of the foreign players to disrupt the monopoly the USA’s best had on the tournament.

Nevertheless, the time would eventually come in 1988, when Scottish golfer Sandy Lyle stepped into Augusta National and won his first and only green jacket.

Lyle won the event by just a single shot, holding off Mark Calcavecchia in dramatic fashion to finally become the first man from the UK or Ireland to win at Augusta.

Remarkably though, after waiting so long for a UK winner, Lyle’s victory set in motion a chain of dominance.

Sandy Lyle’s Masters win leads to four years of UK dominance

Just like in life with buses, once one comes, it seems three or four more come at once.

Indeed, this is just what happened after Lyle took home the green jacket.

The following year in 1989, Lyle handed over the jacket to Nick Faldo, who would then win it again in 1990 to make it two in a row.

Still, the fun didn’t stop there for the UK, as Ian Woosnam won in 1991 to do it for Wales and make it four in a row for the United Kingdom.

1992 saw Fred Couples wrestle it back for the USA but even then, three of the next four winners were from outside the states as Bernhard Langer, Jose Olazabal, and then Faldo again all won.

As mentioned, Lyle, Faldo and Woosnam set the scene for the UK to have success at Augusta with a four year stretch of dominance.

However, it would be 2016 until the UK could celebrate another green jacket, as the unfancied Danny Willett saw off Jordan Spieth to win.

Indeed, even after Willett won, we had another near-decade long wait, as Rory McIlroy finally got over the line in 2025 to complete the career grand slam.

Still, the success is there for the UK and looking back, it’s all thanks to Sandy Lyle for kicking things off.
