BLUblox vs Ra Optics - Which is the best brand?

If you’re on the lookout for some new blue blocker glasses but are struggling to decide between BLUblox and Ra Optics, then you’ve landed on the right page.

Both of these brands have established themselves as leading players in the blue light blocking glasses market as more people start to recognise the benefits of using them after dark.

The Ra Optics and BLUblox brands have similar products and lenses, so the purpose of this article is to take a look at both of them to see the differences and similarities.

We’re going to be paying particularly close attention to the important factors for consideration, such as the lens quality, the frames and styles and what customers have been saying about them.

We’ll then round things off by making a recommendation about which of BLUblox and Ra Optics we actually prefer, having tried them both.

We’re going to split this article up into the following sections:

• Company Background and Reputation
• The Lenses
• The Frames
• What Are Customers Saying?
• Price
• Anything Else to Consider?
• BLUblox vs Ra Optics – Our Recommendation

So, with the introductions out of the way, let’s start taking a closer look at BLUblox and Ra Optics to see where these two popular brands stand.

Company Background and Reputation

As you can see from the comparison above, these brands are pretty similar. They have both come to market in the last few years and are dedicated to providing a stylish solution to the blue light at night problem.

BLUblox was founded by Andy Mant in Australia, while Ra Optics was founded by Matt Maruca in the US.

Both of the brands sell their glasses online and directly from their official websites. This means that you can’t buy them in stores or at Amazon at the moment, although that may change in the future.

BLUblox and Ra Optics both offer day and night lenses. While most people who are buying blue blockers for the first time are looking for night lenses, there are also some benefits to blocking out certain frequencies of blue light from artificial sources during the daytime.

OUR VERDICT: This round is a draw. Both of the brands have similar products and a similar story. Ultimately, they are both trying to help solve the same problem of too much blue light at night in a stylish way.

The Lenses

So, now it’s time to compare the actual lenses offered by both companies.

In this section, we’re going to focus on the nighttime lenses offered by both BLUblox and Ra Optics, as they will be the most popular. However, you should bear in mind that both companies offer daytime blue blockers as well.

For this comparison, we put the BLUblox Crystal Sleep+ lens up against the most similar one offered by Ra Optics, called Popp. As you can see for yourself, these two products are pretty similar looking.

Ra Optics vs BLUblox Frames

BLUblox – Sleep+

BLUblox’s Sleep+ lens is their main offering for people looking to block out blue light after sunset.

The official website claims that the Sleep+ lens is the “world’s most advanced” blue and green light blocking lens.

The description promises that this lens will block out 100 per cent of blue and green light from 400 to 550 nanometers, making it the “optimal” choice for use after dark.

The website also says that these lenses are great for use while trying to realign your body clock after jet lag.

Ra Optics – Ultimate Night

The Ra Optics Ultimate Night lens is their main offering for people looking for a nighttime blue blocker.

The official website says that the Ultimate Night lenses block all light wavelengths up to 550 nanometers, which basically makes them identical to the BLUblox offering.

The description promises that the Ultimate Night lenses will block out the blue and green frequencies of light after dark to allow your body to adapt to more natural lighting conditions.

OUR VERDICT: This round also ends in a draw! As you can see for yourself from the photo above of the products side by side, the lenses are very similar indeed. In fact, when we tried them, we noticed that the produce basically the same effect. The lenses on both products were particularly good at helping to tone down the light emitted by our television and devices after dark.

The Frames

Now it’s time to compare the frames on offer from both companies. As we mentioned above, we tried out the BLUblox Crystal and Ra Optics Popp frames, as they are the most similar looking.

BLUblox frames

BLUblox Crystal Sleep+

We were generally impressed by the quality of the frames offered by BLUblox. The build is solid and they come with a protective case, carrying pouch and cleaning cloth.

The hinges do not spring into place like the RA Optics Popp frames, but they do the job just find and look stylish at the same time.

At the time of writing, BLUblox offered a total of 20 different frame styles, and also promised to add their lenses to any frames to make custom blue blockers.

As you can see from the photo above, the Crystal frames from BLUblox have slightly larger lenses, which obviously makes them a little bit better at blocking out more light.

That said, you only really need to worry about blue light coming from above or head on, as blue light coming from below is not thought to have much of a biological effect on the body.

Ra Optics frames

Ra Optics Ultimate Night with Case

We were very impressed by the Ra Optics frames. They have a quality feel to them and in our opinion, they just shade BLUblox in terms of build quality.

At the time of writing, Ra Optics offer nine different frame styles on their official website.

Every pair of Ra Optics blue blockers come with a protective case and lens wipe.

OUR VERDICT: Ra Optics takes this round. Both products are high quality, but we slightly prefer the Ra Optics frames over BLUblox.

What Are Customers Saying?

Both of these brands are quite new, so there is not a huge amount of feedback from customers.

The reviews we found on Facebook were generally positive. Both brands seem to keep customers happy, although there were some complaints about delivery problems related to both Ra Optics and BLUblox. This is fairly standard for most online brands.

OUR VERDICT: This round is a draw. Both companies have solid positive reviews, although we will update this section as more and more people try them out.

Ra Optics vs BLUblox

Price

Now it’s time to focus on the all important price tag – which of BLUblox or Ra Optics offers more bang for your buck?

BLUblox Price

The cheapest pair of BLUblox Sleep+ glasses comes in at $101. The most expensive pair costs $169.

Ra Optics Price

The cheapest pair of Ra Optics Ultimate Night glasses comes in at $129. The most expensive pair costs $299.

OUR VERDICT: As you can see, the BLUblox range is slightly more affordable. The most expensive pair of Ra Optics glasses comes in at a wallet-busting $299. BLUblox takes this round for being the more affordable of the two brands.

Anything Else to Consider?

Blue light blocking glasses represent a really great way to reduce the harmful effects of blue light after dark.

They are useful tools to help improve your health – but they will not solve your problems all on their own.

Good health has many contributing factors, and they sticking to a good diet, exercising regularly and getting plenty of good quality sleep.

Blue blockers can help, but you should also work at improving the other areas of your lifestyle to take full control of your health.

BLUblox vs Ra Optics – Our Recommendation

So, that brings us to the end of our BLUblox and Ra Optics comparison.

To summarize, this comparison ended in a draw, with BLUblox winning the price round and Ra Optics winning the round on frame build quality.

We love both brands and if you’re looking for some blue blockers to help with your sleep, then both BLUblox and Ra Optics are great options.

OUR VERDICT: The bottom line is that the products offered by both BLUblox and Ra Optics are very similar and they will both have similar bottom-line effects. We’re big fans of both brands, and you’re not going to go too far wrong by choosing either of them!
