Gold Standard Pre Workout or C4? They’re two popular pre workout supplements made by Optimum Nutrition and Cellucor, but which one is the best?

We’ve done all of the hard work for you by taking a detailed look at both of these popular supplements to decide which is the best option for you.

There are so many pre workout supplements on sale right now that it can quickly become pretty difficult to pick which one is the best for you.

Optimum Nutrition and Cellucor are both popular supplement brands, but how do their main pre workout offerings compare when pitted against each other?

Here’s what we looked at when comparing these two popular pre workouts:

• Company Reputation and Product Background
• The Servings
• The Ingredients
• Side Effects and Safety
• Price

So let’s get cracking and start to compare Cellucor C4 with Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre Workout.

Company Reputation and Product Background

Let’s start by summarazing both of these products.

Gold Standard Pre Workout:
• Made by Optimum Nutrition
• Promotes energy
• Enhances focus
• Contains creatine
• Increases endurance

C4 Original:
• Made by Cellucor
• Promotes ‘explosive’ energy
• Contains creatine
• Boosts focus

As you can see by the comparisons above, these products are quite similar in their goals.

They’re designed to promote energy and boost focus during training sessions to make sure that you get the very most out of your time spent training.

Like many pre workouts out there, both of them contain small doses of Creatine and energy boosters such as Caffeine.

We’ll get into the individual ingredients later, but the lists are both pretty similar.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Both of these products are designed to help you perform at your best in the gym. They contain similar ingredients, although Gold Standard is more to our liking (more on that later).

The Servings

Most pre workout supplements are designed to be mixed with water and taken a certain amount of time before beginning your training session to make sure that you’re feeling at your best while working out.

Gold Standard and C4 are no different.

With Gold Standard Pre Workout, you mix one scoop into a glass of water around 20-30 minutes before training.

Gold Standard comes in a number of flavors, including Fruit Punch, Green Apple, Pineapple, Strawberry Lime and Watermelon.

It’s the same with C4. Take one scoop and mix it into a glass of water around 20-30 minutes before training.

C4 comes in a range of flavors, from Juice Candy Burst to Green Apple, as well as Watermelon.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Both of these products have identical directions for you. You mix one scoop with a glass of water around half an hour before training. Both of them come in a range of different flavors.

The Ingredients

Now it’s time to take a look at the all important ingredients list. Just how good are these products, really?

Here’s a breakdown of both labels:

Gold Standard and C4 ingredients

As you can see for yourself, there are a lot of similarities between these two pre workouts, but there are also quite a lot of differences as well.

The first thing we were disappointed to see is that C4 uses a proprietary blend as one of its main ingredients.

A proprietary blend is when a manufacturer masks the individual doses of the ingredients in a overall ‘blend’.

We hate to see this because it makes it very difficult to truly judge the effectiveness of the product.

A small proprietary blend amongst other top ingredients is not the end of the world, but when the main ingredients of the product have their doses concealed, it’s not ideal.

It should be noted that Gold Standard also uses a small, 25mg blend, but the main ingredients are clearly listed along with their doses.

Both Gold Standard and C4 use caffeine as a stimulant to help you feel energized and focused in the gym

Gold Standard uses 175mg of caffeine per serving, which is just below our recommended pre workout dose of 200mg. We don’t know how much C4 uses because of the proprietary blend.

Both of these products also contain Creatine, which is a great pre workout ingredient, because it can help to boost hydration and reduce fatigue.

They both also include practically identical doses of Beta Alanine. However, this isn’t one of our top rated pre workout ingredients because of the side effects it can cause in some people.

It was great to see that Gold Standard uses L-Citrulline as an ingredient.

Overall though, we feel that both of these products are lacking a number of key ingredients that stop them from being considered as the best pre workout out there right now.

Check out our selection of the best pre workouts on sale right now by hitting the link above.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Gold Standard definitely wins this round because of its superior ingredients and because C4 uses a proprietary blend (not good). That said, we definitely feel there are products out there right now that have better ingredients.

Side Effects and Safety

Next up, it’s time to focus on the all-important potential side effects of both products.

Most modern day health supplements are pretty safe because they tend to only use natural ingredients.

That being said, there are always a few things to look out for.

When it comes to pre workout supplements, the main thing to be wary of is the overuse of stimulants.

Both of these products contain Caffeine, which is a great ingredient when used in moderation.

Gold Standard uses 175mg of Caffeine per serving, which is a good amount, but we don’t know how much C4 uses because it’s included as part of a proprietary blend.

We’re also not to keen about Beta-Alanine as an ingredient. Be sure to check out our pick of the best pre workout without Beta Alanine on sale right now.

We always recommend doing your own research into the ingredients before trying a new supplement for the first time.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Look out for caffeine content in pre workouts. Gold Standard uses a decent 175mg dose, but C4’s Caffeine doses is concealed in a proprietary blend.

Price

Our final section focuses on the all-important price. Which of these two pre workouts offers the better value for money?

At the time of writing this post, Gold Standard Pre Workout is currently available for $29.99 per tub of 30 servings.

C4 Original currently costs around $29.99 per tub (30 servings).

That makes this round a tie, they are both priced as mid-range pre workout supplements.

THE BOTTOM LINE: This round is a tie. Both of these products have identical price tags for a 30 serving tub.

Conclusion – The Best Pre Workout?

Both of these products are popular, but we have to side with Gold Standard on this occasion because it has better ingredients and doesn’t use a proprietary blend for its main stack like C4.

That said, we feel there are definitely some superior products on sale right now, because Gold Standard is still missing some of the best pre workout ingredients in our opinion.
