I’ve never been blessed with coordination or swagger in abundance so the scepticism was well-founded.
But the idea of trying something different to a normal spin class appealed to me, especially as I can struggle with the monotony of bike-orientated sessions.
Sarah-Jane doubles up as the business founder and class instructor and her warmth is immediately evident, putting any nervous newcomers, like this one, at ease.
Admittedly, it took me the first quarter-of-an-hour, which is just a warm-up, to find my groove and rhythm as I ironed out some clumpy cycle work.
When the class is in full flow, Sarah-Jane’s instructions are clear and concise, and she emphasises that there is no pressure to land the moves straight away.
The thumping tunes add to the atmosphere of the class and before you know it, you’re completely immersed in the sequence of moves, which means any inhibitions are left outside of the studio.
We learn a number of dance manoeuvres to Rihanna and Sean Paul’s classic, ‘Break It Off’, swaying on our bikes and engaging our core muscles.
The participants work towards nailing the full sequence for the final 15 minutes of the class, which in sync, makes for an impressive spectacle.
As you reach the class’ climax, the aim is to gradually increase the resistance, although you hardly notice your legs working harder as you concentrate on recalling the sequence of dance moves.
While the class isn’t as obviously fitness-based as traditional spin classes as Sarah-Jane makes sure we are have fun with our groove moves, you are getting a rigorous workout. My body could testify to a healthy amount of exertion the following morning!
Before I know it, an hour has flown by – my t-shirt is drenched in sweat and my core is letting me know that I’ve been working harder in GrooveCycle than other orthodox spin sessions.
In fact, GrooveCycle has become an integral part of my workout schedule at Reebok Sports Club, which is the best endorsement I can give this demanding but fun-filled class.
For those interested in finding their inner groove, Sarah-Jane currently runs GrooveCycle classes at Canary Wharf, Convent Garden and Fulham – and non-members can book their first class for free online.
