We get it, it can be confusing enough trying to find the best fat burner supplement on sale right now, so when one manufacturer has more than one option, it makes it even trickier to pick the right product.
MuscleTech’s Hydroxycut range is one of the more popular one out there.
We’re always interested to hear about their latest products, so it was interesting to pit the old classic Hardcore Next Gen alongside new kid on the block Black Onyx.
To compare both of these products, we’re going to look at the following five categories:
• Company reputation and product background
• The servings
• The ingredients and dosages
• Side effects
So, without further ado, let’s get right down to business and start comparing Hydroxycut Next Gen with Black Onyx.
Hydroxycut Hardcore Next Gen summary:
• Made by MuscleTech
• Promotes thermogenic fat burning
• Increases energy levels
• Enhances mental focus
Hydroxycut SX-7 Black Onyx summary:
• Made by MuscleTech
• Promotes weight loss
• “Extreme” energy
• “Sensory experience”
As you can see, these two Hydroxycut products made by MuscleTech look pretty similar, but there are some subtle differences.
Next Gen is marketed as more of a direct fat burning and weight loss product, while Black Onyx seems to be more geared towards increasing energy and focus, although it does also claim to promote weight loss.
We’ll get onto the ingredients later on, but there is definitely some crossover between these two products.
Both of them claim to give you “extreme” energy to help keep you feeling on point even when you’re dieting.
Both Next Gen and Black Onyx also promise to deliver mental focus as part of the package.
Now don’t get us wrong, “extreme energy and “mental focus” sounds great and all, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that these products should geared towards getting your body to burn more fat.
Yes, a good fat burner should also help increase energy levels and suppress appetite, but increasing metabolism through thermogenesis should be the real goal.
It was a bit disappointing to see that neither of these products seem to help suppress appetite, which is something we like to see in the best fat burners because it can help make sticking to your diet easier.
The servings of any supplement can often give a good indication as to how effective a product is going to be, because generally speaking, the more often you have to take a product, the greater effect it is likely to have.
Burning more fat is not an easy task for your body. To be successful, you need to make sure that you’re supplying your body with exactly what it needs to do so.
That means regular servings, often in smaller doses, to make sure that your body is getting what it needs to help shift the fat on a regular basis.
With Hydroxycut Next Gen, you start off with one capsule once a day, before working your way up to two capsules twice a day after a week, as per the instructions on the label.
With Hydroxycut Black Onyx, you start off with one capsule daily, and gradually work your way up to three capsules per day, as per the instructions on the label.
Now, both of these seem a little bit too complicated for our liking.
We prefer products which keep it simple, with easy to follow instructions.
In fact, our top recommended fat burner supplements simply require you to take one capsule, four times a day.
Now it’s time to take a close look at the all important ingredients of these products.
Let’s kick this section off by taking a close look at the labels of both products:
As you can see for yourself, both of these products use some similar ingredients.
They both use the solid fat burner ingredient Green Coffee Bean Extract. We love this particular ingredient because it’s rich in a substance called Chlorogenic Acid, which studies have shown to promote weight loss.
They also both use a solid dose of Caffeine Anhydrous (one of the purest forms of caffeine) to help raise energy levels. This is great – Caffeine is one of our favorite fat burner ingredients.
Both Next Gen and Black Onyx also uses Yohimbe Bark Extract. We’re not huge fans of this ingredient. We’ve seen it used in quite a few supplements recently, but we’ve read that it can cause some unpleasant side effects.
Black Onyx also uses L-Theanine as one of its main ingredients, which is a bit of a surprise as we’d usually associate this with the leading pre workout supplements.
We always recommend that you do your own research before taking a supplement for the first time by carefully checking the label.
One of the main problems with fat burners and other supplements in this category is the overuse of stimulants such as caffeine.
Too much caffeine can cause unwanted side effects such as the jitters or energy crashes.
We feel that Next Gen overdoes it on the caffeine. If you stick to the recommended dose of four capsules per day, that amounts to 580mg of caffeine per day, which is too much in our opinion.
Black Onyx uses a more sensible lower dose of caffeine at around 300mg per day.
As mentioned above, we’ve read that Yohimbe can cause side effects such as stomach upset, anxiety, headaches and dizziness. We’re not big fans of Yohimbe as a fat burner ingredient.
Now it’s time to focus on the all-important price tag. Do these products offer good value for money?
Hydroxycut Next Gen: $39.99
One bottle of Hydroxycut Next Gen contains 100 capsules, meaning that it will last you for 25 days if you take the maximum recommended dose of four capsules per day.
Hydroxycut Black Onyx: $54.99
One bottle of Hydroxycut Black Onyx contains 80 capsules, meaning that it will last you for around 26 days if you stick to the maximum recommended dose of three capsules per day.
That wraps up our direct comparison of Hydroxycut Next Gen vs Black Onyx.
Overall, these are both OK products, but we feel that they do not live up to the billing as one of the best fat burners on the market.
Instant Knockout is currently our top recommended fat burner on the market right now because it contains the best blend of ingredients we could find and also has great customer reviews.
