Insanity Workout: 10 frequently asked questions

Reebok Sport Club's Group exercise manager Tanya Camilleri answers frequently asked questions about Insanity Workout

1) What types of people are suited for Insanity?

You can start at all levels because you have the base option here. The Insanity Home DVD doesn’t really give you that because it has been designed for group exercise, you always have a high or a low-level. For example, you can take out the jumps and you have the easier option. You either go low impact or high impact which allows you to build towards high impact. It is for all levels. You can keep at low impact and improve and you can take it to the next level.

2) What would you say to people who are hesitant to try Insanity?

I’d say give it a go. If you’ve come across the Insanity Home DVD, this class is completely different. The Insanity Workout at Reebok Sports Club has been specifically designed for group exercise classes. With any group exercise classes, no matter what you do, there are always easier options. You can go to an advanced class. If you have an injury, there is still an option for you.

3) How many times should you go a week to feel the benefit of Insanity?

To feel the benefit, you should go twice per week, maybe three times. Certainly not one. We do it twice-a-week here. After a while, your body adapts to it. So that’s why I change the exercises.

4) Does it really burn 1,000 calories per hour?

Yes it can do. You do every single rep with no recovery. They give you 30 second recovery but it is better to keep moving and keep your heart-rate going.

5) What should you eat before Insanity?

If I’m teaching in the evening, I make sure I have my pasta lunch and plenty of carbs. But everyone works differently so there is no rule going, ‘please eat your carbs because that is the only thing that will get you through Insanity’. But at lunch-time, I’d definitely have something ready for the afternoon.

6) … and afterwards?

About an hour afterwards, I’d have a big chicken and salad. Definitely not Nandos! White meat is better, Turkey or even better rabbit.

7) What attracted you to Insanity?

I heard it was coming over here and I heard of Shaun T. Obviously being exercise manager here, I always have to know what is happening and trending. Insanity has been around of a while and as sound as I heard it was coming to the UK, I put myself on the training course. I was one of the first instructors to put it on the timetable.

8) Do you have a loyal following?

Definitely. You see the same faces twice-a-week. I was away for a while due to injury but it was nice to come back and see everyone still there.

9) How long before you start to see the benefits?

It is about what you put into it. If you stick to the workout and eat healthy food, give it six-to-eight weeks, and you’ll definitely see results.

10) Are women better-suited to Insanity?

It is a combination. Women have better co-ordination but that is why more men should come to it because it is what they need to improve. A lot of guys just want to pump weights but you’ll injure yourself because your body isn’t mobile enough.
