Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy – The Basics
It comes in a flavoured powder form which is designed to be mixed with water and consumed as a drink. It’s available in a range of different flavours, including:
• Fruit Fusion
We tried out the Fruit Fusion flavour, which forms a red-coloured liquid when mixed into a glass of water.
The label of Amino Energy says that this supplement is designed to help support you on your health and fitness journey, and it suggests that this supplement can be used “anytime”.
This is what sets it apart slightly from a traditional pre workout supplement, which is usually used only before periods of exercise.
The product description on the Amazon.com listing says that this supplement features a “unique formula” which contains just five calories per serving, along with 100mg of Caffeine.
As you may have guessed by its name, Amino Energy delivers a wide range of Amino Acids in its formula. This makes it a perfect supplement for someone looking to up their intake of some important Amino Acids.
Amino Energy also contains a range of different ingredients, including things such as Green Tea and Caffeine, along with Green Coffee Bean Extract and Beta Alanine.
This supplement does not contain some of the ingredients found in the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre Workout such as Creatine.
Amino Energy is available to buy from a number of retailers online, and it’s also available in certain shops.
So, now that we’ve covered some of the important things you need to know about Amino Energy as a supplement, it’s time to start taking a closer look at the ingredients formula it uses.
Let’s begin this part by taking a close look at the actual ingredients label of Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy.
It’s important to note that this was the label shown on Amazon.com at the time of writing, but it’s always best to check the details of any product you’re thinking of buying, as manufacturers may tweak their formulas from time to time.
Here is the full Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy ingredients label, shown on Amazon.com at the time of writing.
As you can see for yourself, Amino Energy contains a range of ingredients including Amino Acids and Plant Extracts.
The one slightly disappointing thing we noticed off the bat was the fact that the Amino Acid doses are contained within a blend. This means that we don’t know the individual doses of each of the ingredients in the blend, and we only know the total dose of the blend, which is 5 grams.
Aside from the blend, the other three ingredients in the formula are Caffeine, Green Tea Extract and Green Coffee Bean Extract.
The use of Caffeine in this supplement is what sets it apart a little bit when it comes to other BCAA-focused supplements.
Each serving of Amino Energy contains a total of 100mg of Caffeine, which is about the same amount that you’d expect to find in a regular cup of Coffee.
Amino Energy also uses two popular plant extracts – Green Tea and Green Coffee – in its formula.
Within the Amino Blend are a range of ingredients that you’d expect to find in a regular pre workout supplement, including things such as Taurine, Beta Alanine and L-Arginine.
It’s worth noting that Amino Energy does not use Creatine in its ingredients formula, so it may suit people who are looking for a supplement without Creatine specifically.
One of the downsides of this supplement coming in a powder form is that it uses ingredients such as the sweetener Sucralose to enhance its flavour.
If you want a simple BCAA supplement without any additives of flavourings, then it may be worth opting for a capsule-form product.
We tried out the ‘Fruit Fusion’ flavour or Amino Energy. As per the directions, we mixed around two level scoops into a glass of water.
The mixture dissolved very quickly to form a pinkish-red liquid, which was pleasant to drink. It was sweet, but not too much so, and it had a pleasant fruity aftertaste.
Price and Where To Buy
You can buy Amino Energy from various online retailers, and you’ll also find it in some shops as well.
One tub containing 65 servings currently costs $39.99 on Amazon, which works out at about $0.61 per serving.
There is also another tub size of 30 servings which costs slightly less in total.
How To Take It
It’s important that you carefully read the entire label of any supplement you’re thinking of trying for the first time.
The directions shown on the Amazon listing page for Amino Energy at the time of writing were as follows:
You should mix 9g (which is about two scoops) with 10-12 fl oz of water.
There is no specific guidance when it comes to the timing of taking this supplement. However, if you’re thinking of using it as a pre workout supplement, then you can probably drink it around 20 to 30 minutes before starting your training session.
Because of the Caffeine content in this supplement, it’s probably best not to take it within around six hours of when you plan to go to sleep.
It’s always best to speak to your doctor before taking any new supplement or making any major lifestyle changes.
One of the main things to bear in mind with this supplement is that it contains 100mg of Caffeine per serving. This is about the same amount of Caffeine that you’d expect to find in a regular cup of Coffee.
For this reason, if you’re sensitive to stimulants or are already consuming a lot of Caffeine from other sources, it may be best to avoid this product.
There is a warning on the label saying that you must not take more than the recommended dose, or more than six scoops in any four-hour period, or 10 scoops a day.
The label also says that this supplement should not be used alongside alcohol, and it is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18.
You should not take this supplement if you are taking any prescription medication, have any underlying medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, without first having consulted your doctor.

Anything Else To Consider?
As we have mentioned above, it’s best to speak to your doctor before thinking about taking a new supplement for the first time, or making any major lifestyle changes.
Dietary supplements are not intended to replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle overall.
It’s generally best not to regard fitness-focused supplements as ‘magic’ pills or powders that will work without any effort on your part.
Ensuring that you’re sticking to a good diet, following a sensible workout routine and getting plenty of quality restorative sleep are three of the most important things you can do to support your health overall.
Supplements can help to support you on your health and fitness journey, but they are not going do much unless you’re prepared to put in some effort yourself.
Conclusion – Our Final Thoughts
So, that brings us to the end of our detailed look at the Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy supplement.
All in all, we think that this is a pretty option that combines a range of important Amino Acids with other ingredients such as Caffeine and Green Tea Extract.
The main downsides are the fact that it uses a proprietary blend, so we don’t know the doses of some of the ingredients, and that it also contains the sweetener Sucralose.
Overall though, this is a popular supplement made by Optimum Nutrition which can help to support your health and fitness goals when used in a sensible way.
