Gold Standard Pre Workout has some pretty solid ingredients on its list, but there are also quite a few things missing in our opinion. But more on that later, let’s focus on the things actually on the label first.
• Creatine Monohydrate – Finally! We’ve been harping on about creatine as a great pre workout supplement for ages now, and it’s great to see a product with it included. Most people know Creatine for its post workout benefits, but it’s less known that it can boost hydration and combat fatigue in your muscles during intense training sessions. So far, so good.
• Caffeine – Another one of our top-rated pre workout ingredients, caffeine is well-known for its ability to boost energy and increase focus levels. The key here is making sure that the dose is correct and not more than 200mg. Gold Standard just comes in at 175mg per serving, which is a decent amount.
• Beta-Alanine – Although we see this ingredient all over the place in pre workout supplements these days, we don’t consider it to be crucial. It’s well known for its claimed ability to boost stamina during high intensity sessions. We don’t consider it crucial though and it’s not one of our top pre workout ingredients.
• L-Citrulline – This is another solid ingredient. Gold Standard Pre Workout contains L-Citrulline in its ‘Micronized’ form, and 750mg of it. Citrulline is an amino acid extracted from watermelon, which can boost muscle pumps thanks to its ability to dilate blood vessels. Our preferred form of this ingredient is Citrulline DL-Malate, though.

Although there are definitely lots of positives about Gold Standard, there are also quite a lot of our favorite ingredients missing.
Firstly, we were disappointed not to find any L-Theanine on the label. This is one of our favorite ingredients because it combines brilliantly with caffeine to help you get the best effects without any of the side effects, such as jitters or energy crashes later in the day.
Beetroot extract was also missing. Although this is definitely not one of the most popular pre workout ingredients, it should be in our humble opinion. It’s been shown to increase Nitric Oxide levels, which can help trigger amazing muscle pumps.

Most popular pre workout supplements these days are pretty safe because they tend to only contain natural ingredients.
That said, there are also a few potential stumbling blocks. Firstly, check that the product you’re considering doesn’t overdo it on the stimulants. You want a smooth energy boost that lasts, not a sudden rush which then triggers an energy crash.
Generally, you’ll want your pre workout supplement of choice not to contain any more than 200mg of caffeine per serving.
It’s also worth doing some of your own research into the individual ingredients to make sure that you’re not allergic to any of them.

It’s currently available in a number of flavors, including Green Apple, Pineapple and Strawberry Lime.
The directions say that you should mix one scoop with a glass of water around 20-30 minutes before starting your training session.
The label also says to start off with one scoop to assess your tolerance before increasing the dose.
If you train in the evenings, this is probably not the right product for you, because it contains enough caffeine to disrupt your sleep.
We found lots of reviews of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre Workout on sites such as Amazon.
At the time of writing, it had 577 reviews on that particular site and 302 of those were five stars, which is pretty good going. 60 of those 577 reviews were one star.
One customer described the pre workout as very potent and said that it gave them lots of energy.
Someone else said that it tasted great and mixed well, adding that it gave them the ‘kick’ they needed before their workout.
Another customer said that the product had no effect on them at all, and someone else claimed that the taste was awful, although it wasn’t clear which flavor they were talking about.
It’s a good option but it’s not our top pick of the best products out there at the moment.
