Spotted in gym bags across the land, BCAAs – Branched Chain Amino Acids – are a popular sports supplement claimed to help with your body and fitness goals.

If you’re serious about your fitness, you will no doubt have heard of them before, and perhaps wondered if they’d be right for you. Or maybe you’re already a user of BCAAs but are thinking of changing your brand.

Either way, this review of Performance Lab SPORT BCAA will tell you everything that you need to know…

Product website:

What does Performance Lab SPORT BCAA do?

BCAA supplements like Performance Lab SPORT BCAA are made up of three essential amino acids that the body cannot make itself, hence the need to gain them from diet or supplementation.

The three amino acids in question are leucine, isoleucine and valine. The three together make up about 35% of the natural protein in your body, and BCAA intake is claimed to help support your workout and training goals, particularly with endurance, recovery and muscle building. For this reason, it is a popular supplement with athletes, bodybuilders and even everyday gym goers.

It should be mentioned that none of the health claims surrounding BCAA products have been proven as yet.

Of course, supplements are not ‘magic pills’ and you will not get fit or gain muscle without a dedicated diet and training plan tailored to your desires.

What you need to know about the ingredients

Performance Lab SPORT BCAA includes leucine, isoleucine and valine in the generally recommended ratio of 2:1:1. This mimics the ratio of these amino acids naturally found in the body.

You should ensure that any BCAA you take includes at least twice as much leucine – often said to be the most important BCAA – as isoleucine and valine, so the ratio found in Performance Lab SPORT BCAA is ideal.

Performance Lab SPORT BCAA includes 3g of BCAAs in total from one serving (4 capsules).

This is comprised of:

• 1500mg Leucine
• 750mg Isoleucine
• 750mg Valine

This is a generous serving size, and there is the option to take more if required.

What we particularly like about Performance Lab SPORT BCAA is its flexibility. It’s your choice how much you take, depending on your workout and potential supplementation needs.

Performance Lab SPORT BCAA

The Performance Lab SPORT BCAA ingredients formula

BCAAs are often used as a pre- and post-workout supplement, so you can take one serving before your training and one afterwards (two servings – 6g – in total), or you can choose to split 3g (one serving) between both ends of your workout.

The BCAAs in Performance Lab SPORT BCAA are made from sunflowers, meaning they are natural – and should be highly bioavailable and easily absorbed by the body.

What’s missing?

A lot of manufacturers like to add ‘complementary’ substances to their BCAAs, or to drop BCAAs into other products. There’s no need. A BCAA supplement doesn’t need anything else aside from, well, BCAAs! As such, Performance Lab SPORT BCAA plays it straight and doesn’t complicate its formula.

Are there any side effects?

Some people have reported loss of coordination and tiredness after mega high doses of BCAAs (which may also deplete your B vitamins too), but as long as you stay under 10g per day, you should be fine.

Thanks to the natural BCAAs sourced from sunflowers in Performance Lab SPORT BCAAs, this product should be very well tolerated, with no need to cycle.

It is also a very clean formula (more on that shortly), which reduces the chance of any side effects even further.

The above being said, you should always speak to a certified medical professional before trying any new supplement for the first time.

How to take Performance Lab SPORT BCAA

BCAAs can be taken as pre-, post- and even intra-workout if you’re in the middle of an intense physical training session.

Opti-Nutra, the manufacturer of Performance Lab SPORT BCAA, recommends taking 2-4 capsules 45 minutes to one hour before a workout, and 2-4 tablets immediately after your workout.

If you also want to take it intra-workout, you can take the same again mid-way through your training session.

As we mentioned above, we wouldn’t recommend you go above 10g of BCAAs in one day, but other than that, you shouldn’t experience any negative effects.

What are customers saying?

Like all Performance Lab products, Performance Lab SPORT BCAA is only sold via the official website and cannot be found or bought on the likes of Amazon.

What this means is that there are few customer reviews of this product available on the web.

However, it is clear that supplement review websites, bloggers and testers of Performance Lab SPORT BCAA seem to rate it very highly.

Is this the best supplement for me?

The great thing about BCAAs is that they are suitable for anyone – and are, indeed, used by amateur and sport professionals alike, in all areas of sport and fitness.

You don’t just need to be a bodybuilder to take advantage. BCAAs can potentially offer a strong foundation for your own exercise and fitness aims, with the flexibility to be used as you like.

If you’re keen to know what goes into your body, you’ll also be glad to hear that Performance Lab SPORT BCAA is fully transparent about its products (as is the Performance Lab range as a whole). Likewise, it is one of the cleanest BCAA formulas on the market – being free from GMO, allergens, soy, gluten and synthetic additives.

It is also fully vegan and vegetarian-friendly, using Plantcaps® capsules made of tapioca as opposed to gelatine, which many of its competitors use.

None of the Performance Lab range include any banned substances, and its manufacturing process is GMP compliant – meaning that if you compete, you can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing your supplement of choice is fully safe and legal for you to take.

Anything else to consider?

Performance Lab SPORT BCAA is one product in an entire range of GMO-free, stimulant-free, vegan-friendly high-quality sports supplements from Performance Lab.

The manufacturers tell us that all products have been designed to be used in conjunction with any other in the range if so desired, helping to boost their overall effectiveness.

Their BCAA offering, for instance, would go very well with Performance Lab SPORT Pre-Workout and/ or the Performance Lab SPORT Post-Workout, both of which contain creatine. Just be sure not to overwork your body.

Performance Lab’s SPORT range also contains a T booster and a ‘fat burner’.

Performance Lab also offers a ‘core range’ that includes a women and men’s multivitamin, as well as sleep, energy, vision and nootropic supplements.

Review conclusion – Our final thoughts

We’ll be honest: it’s refreshing to find an ethical manufacturer that prides itself on offering safe, natural and quality supplements.

They are out there, of course, but all too often the unscrupulous ones overshadow them. Opti-Nutra’s Performance Lab is a brand that others would do well to emulate.

It opts for simplicity and super-clean formulas wherever possible and refuses to add unnecessary fillers. Its transparency is impressive, as is its commitment to sourcing its BCAAs and more from natural sources (fermented sunflower is one of the purest sources of BCAAs around).

Performance Lab SPORT BCAA really is one of the cleanest formulas that we have seen on the market to date, and with its optimum dosage and purity factor, we think it’s one of the best BCAA supplements you’ll find.
