Healthy smoothies: Best ingredients to use to make perfect post-workout shake

CPress's nutritionist discusses what makes the perfect smoothie, and what ingredients to use and to avoid

1) Why do CPress’s protein smoothies make the ideal post-workout snack?

They are a great source of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in an easily absorbable form to support muscle recovery and maintain energy levels post exercise.

2) What ingredients would you recommend to recreate a CPress smoothie at home?

• Almond Milk
• Cold pressed apple juice
• Frozen Bananas
• Hemp protein if you want added protein
• A selection of superfood powders!

3) What ingredients should you avoid in a smoothie? And why?

Combining too many pieces of fruit, e.g. banana, apple, bluberries, kiwi and papaya – it’s just way too much sugar. Finding a balance between healthy fats, protein and carbohydrates is key.

4) Can you make a smoothie without dairy products?

Absolutely. None of the CPRESS smoothies contain any dairy.

5) Are their CPress smoothies more suited to pre/post workouts?

Majority are more suitable post workout but some are fine beforehand too.

6) For someone who hasn’t tried a CPress smoothie before, which would you recommend?

The Gladiator, it’s our most popular!

7) What is hemp protein? How does it differ to other types (like whey, etc.)?

Hemp protein is made from hemp seeds, which makes it suitable for vegans. It also therefore contains a good omega 3 & 6 profile too, giving it a healthy essential fat profile.

8) What is the difference between flax and chia seeds? Should you use different ones for different type of shakes?

Flax and chia seeds have relatively similar nutritional profiles. Flax seeds are slightly higher in calories per 100g as well as potassium, while chia seeds are higher in fibre and calcium for example. Whichever used is down to personal preference as the textures vary slightly between the two so it’s worth experimenting with both.

9) Would you recommend coconut water/coconut flakes as a must?

For anyone who likes coconut, then yes! Our coconut water is unpasteurised and tastes totally different from the ones found in cartons/tetra packs. It’s definitely worth a try to see how different it tastes!
