Trim up for summer: Flatpack workout at Reebok Sports Club

Kieran Beckles reviews Reebok Sports Club's Flatpack class, which can get your core in shape in time for summer holidays

If you want to be in shape for your upcoming summer holiday, then look no further than Reebok Sport Club’s Flatpack class.

It is that time of year when we turn our thoughts to the beach, sand, sea and sun as that summer holiday you booked months ago starts to edge closer.

But after too many pints, cocktails or wine during the cold, unforgiving months of winter and spring, some of us are left with work to do in the gym.

While I’ve always been relatively fit and strong thanks to my rowing career in my formative years, it has proven difficult to shed enough weight to boast a burgeoning six pack.

So for obvious reasons, Flatpack was a must on Reebok Sport Club’s timetable.

Now their Insanity class is tough (here is my review for those who are still in the dark on this worldwide phenomenon). But in many ways, Flatpack is tougher.

There are no breaks.

It is 30 minutes of non-stop core exercises – which is good for those who want to improve their core strength but not sacrifice their entire Monday evening.

It makes the class much more intense as its creator and instructor Tanya Camilleri affords participants few if any breaks, making sure that we all stay in the zone for the half hour.

Tanya opens the class with a series of plank exercises, mixed in with some side planks with rotations and a range of sit-ups. Your core muscles are soon demanding a break but there is no relief forthcoming.

We get stuck into various exercises which work all the sections of our core before Tanya introduces weights just at the point when your body thinks it can’t take any more.

If your core isn’t already screaming for relief after two-thirds of the class, the final section doesn’t get any easier as you blast through a rapid sequence of exercises.

Tanya encourages all members of the class to participate as we count down the repetitions which in turns helps to moderate our breathing to get us through to the end.

It is a class that delivers results, highlighted by the consistent high number of attendees on a Monday evening. Tanya’s approach is firm but fair – there is no room for short cuts.

With the islands of Santorini on the horizon, the golden beaches of Spain beckoning or a fun-filled holiday in Europe’s party capital Ibiza just weeks away, Flatpack is the perfect class to trim up in time for your summer break.
