We’ve all been there.

After having a few too many drinks at happy hour, you’re mercilessly awoken by your alarm clock with a pounding headache and dry mouth – and if you’re really lucky, some accompanying nausea.

You start to wonder what it all means – but then the memories of last night come flooding back and the painful reality hits you:

You’ve got a hangover.

On a weekday.

Next comes the general sense of panic at how little time you have to get yourself ready and drag yourself to the office.

And that’s all before thinking about what you should eat and drink to help you feel back to normal as quickly as possible.

The scene has become an all-too-familiar one in today’s hectic lifestyles. The mantra of ‘work hard, play hard’ has become the flavour of the day.

There has to be a better way…

We found a product called AfterDrink. It was launched by a London-based doctor in 2017 and contains only natural ingredients.

Using his medical expertise to hand-pick the ingredients, Dr Pedram Kordrostami created AfterDrink after becoming frustrated by the lack of a natural options to help prevent hangovers.

Here, we take a look at the key ingredients of AfterDrink and test out whether it can really act as the miracle hangover cure we’ve been waiting for.

Why it works

You probably don’t need to take any vitamin supplements on a regular basis if you follow a healthy diet and lifestyle.

But we could all do with a much-needed boost from time to time.

There are two main reasons why AfterDrink is so effective at helping to cure a hangover and boost energy levels after a big night out: the serving size (six capsules – three before bed and three in the morning) and the ingredients.

Here are some of the main ingredients in AfterDrink that help make it work so well.

Vitamins and more

Vitamins C and E – Vitamin C is commonly known for its role in supporting the immune system. Both Vitamins C and E are known for their potent antioxidant properties, they are good for the immune system and help maintain healthy skin and eyes.

B Vitamins – A group of eight vitamins that play a role in helping releasing energy from the food and drink we consume as well as maintaining normal function of the nervous system and mental performance. AfterDrink contains six of the B vitamins which have been specifically selected at high strengths to support normal metabolic functions.

Co-Q10 – AfterDrink contains a good dose of Co-Q10, which has been flying off the shelves recently because of its anti-ageing and anti-oxidant effects. It can be bought from on its own own as a single product from anywhere between £10 and 35! AfterDrink includes 30mg in each three-capsule serving.

Alpha lipoid acid – Another powerful anti-oxidant, which helps protect cells from oxidative damage.

Amino Acids

L-Theanine – Found mainly in green tea, research suggests L-Theanine significantly increases the frequency of brain alpha waves, which are usually detected during periods of relaxation and calm.

Acetyl L-Cysteine – Amino acid used normally in hospital to treat paracetamol overdose. Its exact detoxifying and protective mechanism of action is unclear however it is theorised that cysteine increases the production of Glutathione which is a potent anti-oxidant.

Reduced L-Glutathione – Glutathione is included in AfterDrink in its full form to further add to the anti-oxidant load.

Taurine – One of the most abundant amino acids found in the body and has a vast array of functions, particularly in the brain and eyes, where it has a protective role.

Botanical extracts

AfterDrink contains six botanicals, which are included as concentrated extracts. Each three-capsule serving is essentially like having a small plate of these beneficial herbs at the end of a night out.

Turmeric and Ginseng – These ingredients have been included for their anti-inflammatory qualities. Part of the reason why you get hangovers is that your body builds up large amounts of circulating waste products, which effect the most sensitive and active organ in your body – your brain. This causes inflammation at the cellular level, the cause of the pounding headache (in addition to being dehydrated) after a big night out. Turmeric works as a natural substitute to anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen and studies have shown it targets the same pro-inflammatory signals that cause pain.

Bioperine® (black pepper extract) – A patented extract of black pepper – massively increases the absorption of turmeric and B Vitamins.

Ginger – An ancient ingredient packed with amazing anti-inflammatory and anti-sickness properties. It’s so good that pregnant women are STILL recommended to use it to treat morning sickness. AfterDrink packs the equivalent of almost three grams of ginger per serving! Alcohol is a direct toxin and irritant to the inner stomach lining, which is why you sometimes feel queasy after a big night out. The ginger in AfterDrink works over night to help settle the stomach lining.

Chamomile – Not only good for settling an upset stomach, chamomile has the added benefit of producing a calming effect. Known to have anti-anxiety and stress-relieving properties, researchers have shown chamomile relaxes muscles and reduces tension. It’s even used in helping to treat patients with depression and anxiety.

Artichoke – Has been shown to have liver protecting, gall bladder stimulating and cholesterol lowering properties. It is a great anti-oxidant and included regularly in food supplements with liver supporting qualities.

There is plenty of advice online about how to get rid of a hangover. AfterDrink is one solution Photo: AfterDrink

How it works

AfterDrink is essentially a supercharged pill, packed with multiple anti-oxidants, which can help to clear up all of the harmful after-effects of alcohol. The damage from these harmful by-products build up over night while you sleep, harming all of the tissues in your body. That’s the reason why you wake up feeling generally weaker, with a pounding headache and unsettled stomach.

AfterDrink acts as a natural super-cleansing and detoxifying agent to help take the edge off the night before. It certainly helped me enough to be able to function throughout the day and even go to the gym – something I’ve never been able to do after a big night out.

Quick overview

The benefits:

– Felt fresh the next day – No more hangovers

– My energy levels were sky high – I no longer felt sluggish after a night out

– Also helped after travel and sport – The pills can aid recovery

– No side effects – All of the ingredients are completely natural

– Packed with 26 ingredients – The ingredients would cost a fortune to put together if bought individually

The drawbacks:

You can only buy it from one place – boxes are currently sold exclusively on the AfterDrink website

It’s premium priced – It currently costs around £17 a bottle, although there are discounts available for students and on multi-box orders

How to get the best out of it

The serving size is one of the reasons why AfterDrink is so effective as acting as a hangover pill.

It’s recommended that you take three capsules before bed and three in the morning, each time with a full glass of water.

The product website states that you can take it daily if you feel like you need it. Each bottle contains 16 individual servings – which is equivalent to eight nights out.

The best advice we can give to help prevent hangovers in the long-run is to drink plenty of water and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

What else is out there and what are people saying about it?

There a number of other similar products on the market, including Phizz, Fresh Start and Hang Dr. They are not directly sold as ‘hangover pills’ but are believed to have beneficial effects.

There is plenty of information available online about what the best hangover cure is, so it is worth doing your research before committing. It’s no surprise that a quick Google search for ‘how to get rid of a hangover’ returns millions of results.

Having only been launched this year, there are not yet many user reviews of AfterDrink available online, but this is likely to change in the coming weeks and months.

There are, of course, plenty of food and drink options which can help relieve the symptoms of a hangover. Remember, the first thing you should do if feeling groggy after a big night out is to drink plenty of water.

Review conclusion – our final thoughts

If you’re looking to prevent hangovers and take the edge off in a healthy, natural way, this is a supplement you should consider taking.

The ingredients such as Turmeric and Ginseng and the various Amino Acids can play a key role in helping you feel fresh and energised after a big night out.

Each bottle contains 16 individual servings of three tablets, and because you won’t need to take it every day, it should last you a while.

Overall we think this is a great product and we will definitely be keeping a bottle handy for when we need it.
