We sample some of the leading whey protein powders on the market to assess the all-important taste factor.

We mixed these popular vanilla-flavoured whey protein shakes with semi-skimmed milk to see how they rated on the taste scale. Here’s what we learned.

Multipower: 100% Whey Protein – French vanilla

Multipower’s offering is packed with 24 grams of protein from three different sources – whey protein isolate, concentrate and hydrolysate. This is a very sweet tasting shake which may not be to everyone’s liking. We loved it, however, and it always went down a treat after a gruelling gym session.

Protein per serving: 24g
Taste verdict: 8/10

Optimum Nutrition: Gold Standard 100% Whey – Vanilla

Billed as the world’s best-selling protein powder, and packed with 24 grams of premium whey protein, (including 5.5 grams of branched chain amino acids), Optimum Nutrition’s leading product did not disappoint. Granted, it wasn’t quite as sweet as Multipower or Bulk Powder’s offerings but it still tasted great post-workout and is decent value for money.

Price: £29.99 / 908g

Protein per serving: 24g
Taste verdict: 7/10

Nutrition X: Big Whey – Vanilla

This very drinkable shake packs 24.48 grams of protein into each serving and it didn’t disappoint on the taste front either. Made up of whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein, Nutrition X’s offer went down very well indeed after an intense workout. Each serving also contains 4.88 grams of branched chain amino acids to help with muscle recovery.

Protein World: Oats & Whey Blend – Vanilla

This blend is perfect for a breakfast smoothie after the gym, as it designed specifically to replenish glycogen levels post-workout. Although this product is cheaper than some of its rivals, the taste isn’t compromised. While you may take a couple of days to adjust to having the lumpy oats in your shake, they help to keep you feeling full for longer and provide an energy-boosting release of carbohydrate.

Price: £26.00 / 1.4kg
Calories per serving: 221
Protein per serving: 27g
Taste verdict: 7/10

Bulk Powders: Pure Whey Protein – Vanilla

The best value for money by a mile and extremely drinkable, too. Marginally less protein per serving than the others but we couldn’t fault the sweet taste, which bared similarities to Multipower’s offering. Bulk Powder’s Pure Whey contains 82 per cent whey protein and includes high levels of Glutamine and Branched Chain Amino Acids. Overall, you can’t go wrong.

Price: £12.69 / 1kg
Calories per serving: 125
Protein per serving: 23.2g
Taste verdict: 8/10
