The Golden State Warriors are interested in replacing Jonathan Kuminga with a player they looked to draft in 2021

The Warriors have explored a trade for Kuminga, but are unwilling to part with Moses Moody and Buddy Hield. Talks with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns have halted because of this.

Kuminga wants to leave because he said the Warriors have stunted his growth. He turned down a two-year $45 million deal with Golden State. The sides looked to be stuck with each other for another season, but the Warriors may have found a way out of the stalemate.

Golden State Warriors interested in Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga trade

NBA Insider Jake Fischer said the Golden State Warriors are interested in pursuing a sign-and-trade with the Chicago Bulls’ restricted free agent Josh Giddey.

Giddey, like Kuminga, is in a contract negotiation with the Bulls, who won’t offer him the $30 million per year he has requested. That amount is similar to what Kuminga has asked for, so a sign-and-trade is on the table with the pair’s matching salary expectations.

Fischer said on Bleacher Report, “Multiple teams have reached out to Josh Giddey’s representation about having interest in Josh Giddey. Golden State is one of them.

“Golden State would be interested, depending on how the machinations could go in some kind of Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade.”

Fischer said that Giddey was on the Warriors’ draft board in 2021, but instead he was taken by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who won the NBA title last season, and instead Kuminga fell to them.

He continued, “The Warriors were prepared, way-back-when on draft night back in 2021, for Jonathan Kuminga at number six to go to Oklahoma City, and they were ready to take Josh Giddey at number seven.”

Instead, the Thunder took Giddey and the Warriors took Kuminga, and Golden State went on to win the championship with Kuminga in 2022.

Josh Giddey’s playmaking could get the best out of Golden State Warriors’ second unit

The Warriors’ starting five consists of some of the NBA’s all-time greats. Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green make up one of the best trios in the league.

Giddey would most likely run the second unit with his elite playmaking ability. He averaged 7.2 assists per game last season, and dished 11 against the LA Lakers in March before hitting a game-winner.

Playing with the Warriors’ bench unit would give him a plethora of weapons to find with his passing. Brandin Podziemski impressed with his shooting and went off for 28 points in the playoffs last season in the absence of Curry.

Hield represents a solid shooting threat, while Moody and Quinten Post are weapons around the rim. Giddey can lift the ceiling of the Warriors’ offence when Curry is on the bench.
